MAT

Millers Analogies Test
(MAT)

What is the MAT?
This test is used as an admission test for candidates seeking graduate admission (Masters, Specialist, & Doctorate) primarily in the field of education. Some specialized graduate programs other than education also use this test. Most policies related to this test are developed by Pearson and are included in the Candidate Information Booklet. Test dates, test fees, and registration procedures are established by the institution administering the test.

The MAT is a high-level mental ability test requiring the solution of problems stated as analogies. It consists of 120 partial analogies that are completed in 60 minutes. The MAT is intended to measure the ability to recognize relationships between ideas, fluency in the English language, and general knowledge of the humanities, natural sciences, mathematics, and social sciences. There is no foreign-language edition of the MAT. Dictionaries or any other reference aides are not permitted when taking the MAT.  Review the Candidate Information Booklet

Taking the MAT

The MAT is administered through a network of Controlled Testing Centers. Test-takers can apply directly to the Controlled Testing Center of their choice. Locations and phone numbers of the Controlled Testing Centers are available at Miller Analogies Test site or can be requested by calling (800)622-3231. The MAT can be taken either with the traditional paper version or the new computer-based test, please contact your Controlled Testing Center to see what they offer.

After you take the MAT, you will receive your personal Score Report two to three weeks from the date that Pearson receives your test. Your personal Score Reports will provide you with the scaled score and percentile ranks you received on the MAT. The MAT scaled scores currently range from 200 to 600 with a mean (average) of 400. The percentile ranks on your personal Score Report indicate the percentage of examinees in the norm group (2003 Norms) who received a scaled score lower than yours. Percentile rank ranges from 1 to 99. Your personal Score Report also includes a listing of the recipient schools you chose to receive your scores.

The MAT website contains the most current and complete information about the Miller Analogies Test (MAT). It includes information about applying to take the test, the contents of the test, and what happens after you have taken the test. The website also includes strategies for solving analogies, sample items, and a practice test to help test-takers prepare for the MAT.

MAT analogies state a correspondence between two things that are otherwise dissimilar.  The equation for this is A:B::C:D or A is to B as C is to D.

Below are two examples of MAT type analogies:

1)  Grant:2::Hoover:(a. 1, b. 2, c. 3, d. 4)

The answer is a.1.  Grant served two terms as President Hoover served one term.

2)  I:(a. V, b. X, c. D, d. XX)::C:M

The answer is b. X.  This is the Roman numeral for ten.  Therefore, I (one) is to X (ten) as C (one-hundred) is to M (one-thousand).

Retaking the MAT (Only if you took a pencil-n-paper test)
Candidates who have taken the MAT within the last twelve months MUST provide the RETEST ADMISSION TICKET (enclosed with the previous score report) with the Registration Form when applying to take the test.  Registration cannot be processed without this information.  Failure to provide previous test information will invalidate any subsequent scores.  To reorder a Retest Admission Ticket, candidates must contact Pearson at 1-800-622-3231.

Candidates with Special Needs
The Georgia Southern University Testing Office can accommodate most candidates with disabilities; however, the Testing Office should be notified several weeks before the scheduled test date.  Some disabilities may require the administration of a nonstandard test.  For example, Braille and large-print editions of the MAT are available for the visually impaired but ample time must be allowed to order such editions of the test.

Georgia Southern University Students: To qualify for a nonstandard test administration, candidates must contact the Georgia Southern University Student Disabilities Services Office at 912-478-1432.

Non-Georgia Southern University Students: You will need to complete Disability Accommodation Form available on the Miller Analogies Website.
