Georgia Southern University is seeking to achieve the Carnegie Community Engaged Elective Classification (CCE), which is an elective classification that reflects the university’s mission and commitment to community engagement. The process involves a self-assessment of Georgia Southern’s policies, procedures, and involvement with community engagement.
Approval of Georgia Southern’s application would allow the institution to join 359 campuses in the United States who currently possess the designation. Among them are six institutions from the University System of Georgia. Achieving this designation would be a testament to the impact that Georgia Southern makes on not only its region, but its community.
What is community engagement?

The Carnegie Foundation defines community engagement as collaboration between institutions and their larger communities (local, regional/state, national, global) for the mutually beneficial exchange of knowledge and resources in a context of partnership and reciprocity. The results of these collaborations include shared knowledge and resources between Georgia Southern University and the community, increased research opportunities for students and faculty, engaged students who not only have an enriched educational experience, but also understand the importance of being responsible citizens, and an opportunity for Georgia Southern University to contribute to the public good.
