Legislative Internship Program: Intern Spotlights

Jordan DiBenedetto, Junior, Political Science

  • Year and Major: Junior, majoring in Political Science
  • Internship Location: U.S. House of Representatives – Washington, D.C.
  • Internship Position & Responsibilities: As an intern in Congressman Jody Hice’s office, Jordan’s tasks included handling phone calls with constituents, giving tours of the Capitol Building to constituents, drafting letters and thank you notes, greeting and make sure any guests that enter the office are taken care of, and occasionally completing special projects.
  • The Best Part: Jordan told us that “It’s really cool to see or meet other members of Congress, as well as see how everything really gets done on the inside. Becoming acquainted with the staffers in your office makes the job more fun and less stressful. You get to go to some pretty cool meetings/briefings and take advantage of a lot of free food! The vibe/energy in D.C. is unlike anywhere else, and the food there is some of the best in the country.”

Jasmyn Bell, Junior, Political Science

  • Year and Major: Senior, majoring in Political Science
  • Internship Location :U.S. House of Representatives – Washington, D.C.
  • Internship Position & Responsibilities: As an intern in Representative Mike Thompson’s office, Jasmyn’s tasks included constructing Rep. Thompson’s future calendar, drafting scheduling memos, drafting briefing memos, greeting constituents and guests, providing tours of the Capitol, attending Congressional hearings, and assisting with legislative research.
  • The Best Part: Jasmine loved meeting several politicians and celebrities such as Vice President Mike Pence and tv star Taraji P. Henson. She also found it funny that her congressman is the Chairman of the Wine Caucus!

Kyle Gilchrist, Senior, Political Science

  • Year and Major: Senior, majoring in Political Science
  • Internship Location: U.S. House of Representatives – Washington, D.C.
  • Internship Position & Responsibilities: As an intern in Congressman Sanford Bishop’s office, Kyle’s tasks included conducting legislative research and drafted responses to constituent correspondence, drafting press clips and helping with social media, serving as a tour guide to constituents and guests, maintaining the daily operations of the Main Office, presenting analysis and briefings on current legislative and public policy issues, and drafting detailed outlines of notes from congressional hearings, briefings and meetings.
  • The Best Part: Kyle told us that “The most exciting part of my internship was interacting with Members of Congress that inspired me, I will never forget the moment I ran after a congresswoman just to meet her for the first time. Having the ability to go virtually anywhere in the U.S. Capitol was definitely a perk I am going to miss. As enjoyable as my internship was, the lessons and memories I have experienced with my fellow staff members will truly last forever.”
