Keimyung is a comprehensive institution located in impressive Daegu, the fourth-largest city in South Korea.  Situated among many cultural, natural, and historic sites, Keimyung University welcomes hundreds of international students from around the world to engage with its academic programs and strong emphasis on service and community involvement.  Students will have the opportunity to advance their knowledge of Korean Language and Culture, as well as complete academic requirements toward their degrees.

Eligibility: Students should have completed 45 credit hours at the time of application and have an institutional GPA of 2.5.

Fall term: August – December
Spring term: February – June

Accommodations: On-campus residence halls are available to all exchange students.  Most international students choose to live in the KELI (Keimyung English Language Institute) House, which is an English Language dorm, though the International Learning Hall and other general residence halls are available. Students should expect to live in a double room, and will typically be paired to live with a Korean student.  Each floor offers a bathroom, laundry facilities, and a common lounge with internet access, and a study space.  The International Learning Hall offers en suite bathrooms for a higher fee.  The main housing administration building also offers a fitness center, recreational facilities, and a store for purchasing small items and necessities.  Learn more about accommodations at KU.

Meal options: Meal plans are available for purchase at Keimyung, and include 16 meals per week.  Students are also welcome to purchase all meals and food independently.  There are at least four cafeterias as well as bakeries and snack bars on campus that offer a variety of Korean, Chinese, and Western-style dishes and foods for students to choose from.  Otherwise, as the campus is situated in Daegu, a wide range food, restaurants, and eating options outside of the campus are plentiful and easy to access.

How to Apply
In order to apply to participate on the exchange to Keimyung, students will need to carefully complete and submit the forms/information listed below.  All materials should be submitted to the Office of International Programs & Services by the posted deadline.  Students are encouraged to submit all items together.

  1. Georgia Southern Application for Exchange
  2. 500-750 word essay of motivation/educational intent
  3. Two letters of recommendation from a professor or academic advisor
  4. Official copy of your Georgia Southern transcript
  5. Host Institution Course Request List
  6. Copy of your passport information page
  7. Two (2) Passport photos
  8. Copy of your current course schedule

Students who submit all materials by the deadline and meet the eligibility requirements will be invited to the Office of International Programs & Services for a brief interview before committee.

Once formally selected to participate in the exchange program to Keimyung, students will need to complete and print the Kiemyung application for admission and complete the Self Evaluation Medical Form.

How to Search for Courses
Students should note that Kiemyung University does its best to ensure exchange students can enroll in as many of their first-choice courses as possible.  Based on the information provided for each course, students should make sure they are have completed any coursework at Georgia Southern that will assist them in preparing for their course selections.

To find courses, student should use the use the listing of available courses in English.  Students will see links to the most recent Fall and Spring term course lists.  Since Keimyung rotates its course offerings, students can use the most recent complimentary term if their future term is not yet available.  Click the “view” button next to the term you’d like to browse.  Make sure pop-ups are enabled so the new screen is visible.

In the pop-up window, students will see the major, course code and title, and number of credit hours.  Clicking on each course title will provide a brief description and other immediately pertinent information.  Students will need to scroll through several pages of offerings in order to see the complete list of available English-language courses.  Please note that the Korean characters next to the number “10” at the bottom of the page will reveal the next 10 pages worth of offerings.

When completing their Host Institution Course Request List, students should make sure to provide some alternate course options, as well.

Understanding Grades and Credits
Students must take the equivalent of at least 12 Georgia Southern credit hours while abroad.  In the Korean system, courses credits are typically calculated similarly to the U.S. system.  So 3 credits at Keimyung is the equivalent of 3 Georgia Southern credit hours.  So students should plan to take 4-5 courses while attending Keimyung during the semester.
