South Woodlands

woodlandtrailFamily groups of plants native to the southeastern coastal plain create the diverse south woodlands.  Plants include Green Ash (Fraxinus pennsylvanica), Sweet Gum (Liquidambar styraciflua), Red Buckeye (Aesculus pavia), Paw Paw (Asimina obovata), Devilwood (Osmanthus americanus) and more.

longleafpineLongleaf forests once covered the coastal plain from Virginia to Texas.  The longleaf pine wiregrass habitat was the predominant ecosystem of the coastal plain.  The Garden’s example of this community is being restored through replanting and fire management.

The Native Azalea Garden bursts into bloom each spring with many of the region’s fragrant Rhododendron sp.
