Undergraduate Student Mentoring Programs

Mentor: Learning from someone who wants you to grow

Transitioning to college is an exciting! Yet there are times when navigating higher education can be challenging and confusing. Having a strong support system is key to helping students persist and achieve academic success. Mentors serve as part of a student’s success team by providing guidance, support, and first-hand experience in transitioning to life at Georgia Southern.

Georgia Southern has numerous mentoring programs. To help you get started in identifying a program that best fits your needs, please check out the opportunities below.

The Academic Success Center’s Peer Mentor Program supports the academic and social growth of first and second year students. Peer Mentors are academically successful upperclassmen pursuing various majors, and our team is passionate about walking alongside students as they transition to life at Georgia Southern.

Experience Georgia Southern through the lens of a former student while gaining valuable career advice. The Eagle Mentoring Program connects students with alumni in their chosen career fields. Through the program we strive to:

  • Provide student mentees with an in-depth understanding of careers and the skills that will enhance their marketability while providing a platform for alumni to remain engaged with their alma mater.
  • Enhance students’ understanding of their academic program and career options.
  • Ensure students are able to clarify and express short-term and long-term career goals.
  • Provide students with increased access to industry related events and trainings.
  • Allow students an opportunity to develop and hone their networking skills while expanding their network of professional contacts.

Peer Leaders are undergraduate students who are hired and trained to serve as mentors and role models to engage incoming first-year students as they transition to Georgia Southern; help first-year students acclimate to college life; serve as an additional resource for FYE 1220 instructors; and support the Office of First and Second Year Experience.

Hispanic Outreach & Leadership Achievement Program

The Hispanic Outreach and Leadership Achievement Program (HOLA) provides student support services and cultural awareness programs to Hispanic and Latinx students, which strengthen the collegiate experience of a diverse body of campus constituents and community partners.

Our overarching goal is to increase the strategic support that we provide to Hispanic and Latinx students for the purpose of positively impacting their retention, progression, and graduation rates.

The Men of Vision and Excellence (MOVE) is an African-American Male Initiative (AAMI) supported by the University System of Georgia that provides a multifaceted support system for African-American males at Georgia Southern University. The goal of MOVE is to enhance retention, progression, and graduation (RPG) by creating a culture of academic support and success throughout students’ matriculation. This is achieved through programming elements that include, but are not limited to, College Success 101 sessions, Academic Enhancement Activities, and academic support through mentor/mentee pairings, study halls, social activities, team-building activities, and much more.

Minority Advisement Program

The Minority Advisement Program (MAP) is a peer mentoring program that helps first-year and transfer students transition into Georgia Southern University. MAP matches freshmen and transfer students (MAPees) with upperclassmen (MAP Sponsors) to assist with their acclimation to college life and Georgia Southern University.

Sisters with Vision

Sisters With Vision (SWV) is a mentoring and student success program that focuses on providing co-curricular support to students who identify as African-American women. The goal of SWP is to enhance retention, progression, and graduation (RPG) by creating a culture of academic achievement and success throughout students’ matriculation. This is achieved through programming, mentoring, and other initiatives that support healthy identity development, academic and social support, and professional and personal development.

TRIO Student Support Services

The SSS program provides comprehensive services to first-generation students, low-income students, and students with disabilities. The primary goal of SSS is to help transition, retain, and graduate students at Georgia Southern. Through our services, we provide opportunities for academic development, assist with college requirements, and serve to motivate students toward the successful completion of their undergraduate degree program.
