ELP Moves to the Division of Continuing Education

STATESBORO, Ga. – August 10, 2015 –The English Language Program (ELP) previously located in the Center of International Studies (CIS) has recently transitioned to its new location, housed in the Nessmith-Lane Conference Center, as part of the Division of Continuing Education at Georgia Southern University.

The Division will welcome new and returning ELP students for a three day orientation starting August 17-19, 2015 to prepare them for the semester ahead. Orientation will include welcome activities, an ELP placement test, and campus tour.

The ELP at Georgia Southern has previously served international students from various countries including; Saudi Arabia, South Korea, Japan, India, and Brazil; to name a few. The program focuses on the fundamentals of learning the English language as well as give students the opportunity to experience the United States culture through field trips and elective courses. The program also offers these students the ability to apply for conditional admission, where students can seek an undergraduate or graduate degree with Georgia Southern after completing the program.

Belkis Torres-Capeles, Ph.D. Executive Director of the Division of Continuing Education and the Coastal Georgia Center explained, “Our goal is not only to facilitate language learning, but also to encourage critical thinking among international students seeking further educational, personal or professional opportunities.”

The ELP at Georgia Southern University offers a student-centered approach to learning for international students whose first language isn’t English. The Division’s academic, non-credit intensive program supports the idea that whole language practice is facilitated through learning four key skills areas (reading, writing, listening, and speaking) in an active learning environment.
