Science & Mathematics Focus Area

Science and Mathematics encompasses the fields of biology, chemistry, biochemistry, geography, geology, mathematics, and physics. This area is appropriate for students interested in exploring the physical and natural world through research, field analysis, and laboratory experimentation. These majors are also appropriate for students who later consider applying to medical professions schools such as pharmacy, dentistry, medicine, veterinary medicine, and optometry.

Students not ready to declare a specific major can choose to be in Exploratory Science & Math until they have decided on a specific science or math major. Click the button below to view the Exploratory Science & Mathematics Program Map.

Descriptions of each major can be found below. For major-specific information (catalog pages, program maps, career opportunities, etc) click the button below.

Majors

Biology

Prepares students for careers as professional biologists and emphasizes study in cellular/molecular biology, conservation biology, genetics, ecology, evolution, medical entomology, and physiology.

Campus: Statesboro, Armstrong-Savannah

Biochemistry

The Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry degree still provides students with a sound background education in chemistry and will prepare students for advanced studies, entrance into professional schools, and specialized work in biochemistry. The biochemistry degree is particularly suitable for students considering careers in the Biomedical or pre-Health industries.

Campus: Statesboro, Armstrong-Savannah

Chemistry

Combines student-centered classes, broad based laboratory instruction and opportunities for research in analytical chemistry, biochemistry, carbohydrate chemistry, chemical education, food chemistry, organic synthesis and physical chemistry.

Campus: Statesboro, Armstrong-Savannah

Geography

Provides students the opportunity to study the rich variety of events, peoples, landscapes, climates, and biology that characterize the Earth’s surface. Geographers use geospatial tools to understand relationships between place and every aspect of life on the planet.

Campus: Statesboro, Armstrong-Savannah

Geosciences

Degree programs in geosciences offer a broad education in the sciences with special depth in geology and geography.  Students in our program work with nationally and internationally known faculty and state-of-the-art equipment in our teaching and research labs. Students gain a firm understanding of the role of science in society and are able to make informed decisions about geology- and geography-related issues that impact the future.

Campus: Statesboro

Mathematical Sciences

Provides opportunity to learn analytical and computational skills that prepare students for careers in actuarial science, engineering, computer programming, operations research, mathematics education and many other areas. In addition, mathematics majors are typically some of the top performers on exams for medical, dental, business and law school.

Campus: Statesboro, Armstrong-Savannah

Physics

Provides basic undergraduate physics/astronomy education that will prepare students for a variety of careers in industry or science education, and also includes excellent preparation for pursuing an advanced degree in physics. Physics majors have a unique opportunity to participate in cutting-edge research in close collaboration with world-class faculty.

Campus: Statesboro

Sustainability Science

The program of study is interdisciplinary and focuses on the interaction between people and the environment. Graduates are equipped with the writing, math, presentation, technical, and soft skills that are critical for success in today’s economy, as well as prepared for jobs in industry, government, non-profit, and/or educational sectors. Access to natural laboratories, such as sandy beaches, salt marshes, rivers, and woodlands, expands the opportunities available to students.
