April 24, 2020: Research and Scholarship

Dear Faculty,

Over the past few weeks, I have focused my communications primarily on our dealings with transitioning to online/remote education and associated issues. I would like to take the time to give you some Georgia Southern University research news and opportunities.

Undergraduate Research Week

Unfortunately, we could not showcase our students’ fine work at the Research Symposium this week, but that does not obscure the significant impact that many of you had on our students’ research opportunities. You mentored 341 students in research activities this year. We funded 98 students for travel to conferences. We also provided stipends for 117 students to work on funded research projects. I’d like to thank Dr. Asli Aslan, Carol Cox, and the Undergraduate Research Council for all their hard work in making these opportunities happen this year.

Academic Leave Research Grants

I am pleased to announce that Dr. M. Jared Wood (Anthropology) and Dr. Chad Posick (Criminal Justice) have been awarded Academic Leave Research grants in the inaugural competition. Congratulations Jared and Chad!

COVID-19 Research and Funding Opportunities

Research opportunities arise in any crisis and most of the federal funding agencies have made significant funding available for COVID-19 related research projects. You can find a list of these opportunities on the Office of Research website, or contact Dr. Laura Regassa (lregassa@georgiasouthern.edu) for more information.

Research and Scholarship Fall Restart Committee

I know that many of you are facing some immediate challenges in pursuing your research and scholarship. Those of you who need to conduct face-to-face interviews, site observations, field and archival research, and extended lab work have had to adjust or delay particular aspects of your projects. Although we are all still very much in the midst of disruption, I have asked Dr. Chris Curtis to establish a committee to start discussing and planning how we might engage in these activities in a persistent social-distancing environment.
