Reasons for Testing

Mature Provisional Student Must take Reading, Writing, and Algebra COMPASS and abide by placement scores
SAT-Verbal below 430 or ACT English below 17 Must take Reading and Writing COMPASS and abide by placement results
SAT-Math below 400 or ACT Math below 17 Must take Algebra COMPASS and abide by placement results
English CPC Deficiency Must take Reading and Writing CPE and abide by placement results
Math CPC Deficiency Must take Algebra CPE and abide by placement results

Test Preparation
Before you come to take the COMPASS, you may want to brush up on some of your skills.  It is very important that you take this test seriously and come prepared to do your best.  Even though the SAT or ACT can be taken several times, the COMPASS can be taken only once. Your scores on this exam will determine whether or not you place into our Learning Support program.

Scores

Placement into Learning Support courses use the following guidelines:

Algebra COMPASS score below 32 Math 0097, followed by Math 0099
COMPASS score 32-39 Math 0099
COMPASS score of 40 or higher No math requirement
     
Writing COMPASS score below 71 English 0099
COMPASS score 71 or higher No English requirement
     
Reading COMPASS score below 82 Reading 0099
COMPASS score 82 or higher No reading requirement

Georgia Southern COMPASS Retest Policy

Students who meet all of the following requirements are eligible to take the COMPASS retest (at least one week must elapse between the initial test and the retest but no more than four weeks can elapse between the initial test and the retest):

1.    Initial COMPASS taken meets the following deadlines: (These deadlines are only for students who wish to take a COMPASS retest.)
*March 31 for summer admissions
*May 31 for fall admissions
*September 30 for spring admissions

2.    Initial COMPASS score meets the following guidelines:
* Reading score of at least 71 to be eligible for Reading COMPASS retest
* English score of at least 57 to be eligible for English COMPASS retest
* Math score of at least 34 to be eligible for Math COMPASS retest

3. Student has only taken the COMPASS once.

The Testing Coordinator may request a retest be given to a student if an unfair testing situation occurred (such as computer problems or student became ill while taking test).

Even though there is no charge for the initial COMPASS, there is a $20 charge for a retest (unless the test was requested by the Testing Coordinator)

Picture Identification Required for ALL Tests
Please make sure you bring an acceptable ID

Acceptable IDs are: a valid state driver's license, student ID, or passport.
(Not accepted: check cashing cards, picture credit cards, club cards with pictures, etc.)
