"Supporting Academic
Excellence"

Auxiliary
Instruction
is a program designed to aid student success and retention in
historically difficult classes. Students who have been successful in
these courses serve as peer Auxiliary Instruction leaders. They attend
selected sections as guests and then conduct out-of-class study
sessions. Below is a list detailing facts about and advantages of the
program.
-
Auxiliary
Instruction is a series of weekly review sessions for students
taking historically difficult classes.
-
AI
is provided for all students who want to improve their understanding
of course material and make higher grades.
-
It
is a chance for students to get together with peers to compare
notes, discuss important concepts, develop strategies for studying
the subject, and to test themselves before the professor does.
-
The
AI leaders are successful students who guide participants through
these activities.
-
They
are students themselves and are prepared to share with participants
what they have learned about how to study and succeed in these
courses.
-
They
will be in class everyday, hearing what students hear and reading
the same material.
-
They
will not lecture; their job is to help students think about lectures
and course readings and put it all together during AI sessions.
-
Attendance
is voluntary. Students should attend as few or as many session as
they choose. They should bring their notes, textbooks, and their
questions.
-
Studies
have proven that students attending these sessions succeed at higher
levels than those who don’t attend!
-
For
example, students who regularly attended World History AI sessions
at Georgia Southern during Spring Semester 2003 averaged 92 for the
term, while the class average was 78!
