Two Faculty Members Recognized as Most Awarded

OnlineColleges.com has recognized two College of Health and Human Sciences professors as among the most awarded in the state.  Dr. Diana Sturges of the School of Health and Kinesiology and Dr. Trent Maurer from Child and Family Development in the School of Human Ecology were listed as among the state’s top professors.  The website takes into consideration professors’ awards from the past five years, along with online student ranking numbers from the professor rating sites RateMyProfessor, RateMyTeachers and Uloop, to determine the “ultimate list” of top professors in Georgia.

Diana Sturges Earns Top Honors from the University System of Georgia

Dr. Diana Sturges, professor of human anatomy and physiology in the College of Health and Human Sciences, has been selected as a recipient of the Regents’ Teaching Excellence in Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) Award. Designated by the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia (USG), the award is among the highest honors for faculty at Georgia’s public colleges and universities.

Created in 1996, the Regents’ Awards recognize the finest among USG’s full-time instructional faculty for their demonstrated educational excellence in teaching, online teaching and the scholarship of teaching and learning. Award recipients in the past have had a record of exceptional teaching and a strong commitment to impacting student learning, ultimately fostering the academic success of students.

Sturges was very excited upon learning the news. “I am very passionate about SoTL and it is an honor to be recognized at the state level,” she said.

Centers for Teaching and Technology Name SoTL Fellows and Award Recipient

Georgia Southern University faculty members Moya Alfonso, John Dobson and Nancy Arrington have been named Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) Fellows by the Centers for Teaching and Technology (CT2). In addition, CT2 has named Adrienne Cohen as the recipient of the 2014-’15 SoTL Award.


SoTL Commons Conference

The Centers for Teaching & Technology will host the 7th annual The SoTL Commons conference in Savannah, Georgia. The conference brings together people engaging in SoTL and anyone wanting to improve student learning outcomes in higher education today.

The conference epitomizes that college teaching is intellectual work that is enhanced both by disciplinary scholarship and the scholarship on teaching the disciplines (SoTL). The SoTL Commons Conference is a catalyst for learning, conversations and collaborations about SoTL as a key, evidence-based way to improve student learning.

2013 Maryellen Weimer Scholarly Work on Teaching and Learning Award

Image of Misty Loughry A big GS congratulations to Dr. Misty Loughry. Her article, “The Comprehensive Assessment of Team Member Effectiveness:  Development of a Behaviorally Anchored Rating Scale for Self and Peer Evaluation” has been selected to receive the 2013 Maryellen Weimer Scholarly Work on Teaching and Learning Award, which is sponsored by Magna Publications. Her article was selected from a pool of more than 100 pedagogical articles by a review committee, which was overseen by Maryellen Weimer. This award comes with a $1,000 award, which the authors share. It also comes with an invitation to attend the Teaching Professor conference, May 31-June 2 in New Orleans.
