Cost Sharing on Sponsored Projects

Sponsor-required and Non-essential Cost Sharing

Georgia Southern University strictly discourages unnecessary cost sharing and will only provide cost sharing in cases where the sponsor's written guidelines state that cost sharing is required of all applicants. In such cases, cost sharing often takes the form of waived unrecovered F&A costs, academic year effort, and other institutional or third-party contributions. Funds from Federal grants cannot be used to provide cost share toward other Federal grants.

When cost sharing is included in a proposal to a sponsor as the University's contribution toward a project, these costs become required costs of the project. Thus, care should be taken to exclude non-essential institutional commitments in the budget, budget justification, or proposal narrative that may commit the institution to providing cost sharing. In cases where cost sharing is not required, such requests for cost sharing must be approved in writing by the ORSSP.
