IACUC - The Animal Handler Training Program

The Animal Welfare Act and the Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare (OLAW), as part of our insitutional assurance requires that research facilities, “make training available to personnel engaged in animal research and assure the qualification of personnel reviewed.” The Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals requires that individuals in contact with laboratory animals be provided training. The goal of the animal handler training program is to ensure that all persons involved in animal care and use are informed of GSU's IACUC policy and requirements of oversight agencies, technically proficient and fully capable of fulfilling their responsibilities for animal care and use covered under their animal use IACUC protocol, and aware of available resources regarding care and use of animals.

Who should participate:

  • All faculty, staff and students who work with or care for laboratory or wild animals in the course of their employment with Georgia Southern University.
  • All faculty, staff and students who work on a current IACUC protocol.
  • Students (class contact only) as assigned by the instructor.

What do I have to do:

  • Faculty, staff or students working in direct contact with animals:
    • Sign up for access to the training sight through your Mygeorgiasouthern account using the IACUC training registration form.
    • Log into Mygeorgiasouthern (How to access Mygeorgiasouthern Vista).
    • Complete IACUC training modules and accompanying quiz.
    • Passing quiz scores will be automatically emailed to IACUC@georigasouthern.edu.
    • You will receive an email confirmation following successful completion of the last quiz. (Keep the a copy of the confimation email for your records. It will serve as your training certificate for IACUC protocol submissions.)
    • Your training will expire 3 years from the initial training date.
  • Student (class contact only), service workers (physical plant, contractors), visitors to the facility, and administrative staff:
    • Read the Occupational Health Risk Brochure.
    • You may access any of the IACUC modules as assigned by your instructor by registering as described above.
    • If you have questions or concerns, contact your instructor, supervisor or the compliance officer.
