Instructions - Recommendation for Emeritus Status Form
The Recommendation for Emeritus Status Form is used to recommend an emeritus
title for a retiring faculty member.
- Date of retirement is always the last day of a month. (Recommended
effective date is always the first day of the following month.)
- Title at time of retirement and rank at time of retirement are usually
the same, but may be different if the individual holds an administrative position
such as department chair or dean.
- Recommended Emeritus Title(s): Depending on the individual's service
to the institution, there may be more than one title. For example, it is possible
that someone would be recommended as "Professor Emeritus of History and Dean
Emeritus of the College of Graduate Studies." Board of Regents policy allows
the conferral of the title of "emeritus" on any retired and tenured professor,
associate professor, or assistant professor, or Board-approved non-tenure
track faculty of equivalent rank, who, at the time of retirement, had ten
years or more of honorable and distinguished service in the University System.
Also, the institution may confer, at its discretion, the title of "emeritus"
on any Board-approved, retired administrative officer who, at the time of
retirement, had ten years or more of honorable and distinguished service in
the University System.
*NOTE* gender specific terms for "emeritus" and plural versus single
usage:
- Emeritus - male
- Emerita - female
- Emeriti - plural for group of men or group of men and women
- Emeritae - plural for group of women
- Service to the Institution: List all titles and ranks held, with
inclusive dates (including MM/DD/YEAR) beginning with the most recent and
working back. If the person held appointment(s) at other University System
of Georgia institutions, remember to list that service also.
- Education: Begin with the highest
degree and work back.
