Health & Kinesiology in Romania


Join Dr. Diana Sturges and Dr. Manuela Caciula on a 4-week journey through the country of Romania.  Learn about and apply your knowledge in the fields of health, nutrition, and kinesiology in Romania by exploring its natural environment, cultural practices and attitudes, and the value its population places on fresh foods and exercise habits.

Course Titles and Credits:

Students will be required to enroll in 6 credit hours. Students have the opportunity to select from the following:
KINS 2535s – Intro to Exercise Science
KINS 3130s – Research Methods in Kinesiology
KINS/PUBH/NTFS 4195s – Nutrition Diet & Wellness
KINS/PUBH/NTFS 4195s – Exercise as Medicine

Students should be in good academic standing at the time of application.

Dates of Program:
July 1 – July 29, 2017 (Summer Term B)

Program Cost:
Includes: All regional and local transportation; lodging for the duration of the program; breakfast and lunch most days; all required tour and excursion fees; and a medical travel insurance plan.

Additional Costs: Tuition & fees, airfare to and from Bucharest, Romania, additional meals beyond those provided, incidental expenses and souvenirs.

Nature and Purpose of the Program:
The 4-week trip will be based primarily in Brasov, a city located in the central Transylvania region of Romania, which hosts a population of 250,000.  Brasov is surrounded by the Southern Carpathian Mountains and contains thousands of years’ worth of cultural, religious, and politically significant historical sights.  Students will live and study in Brasov while utilizing public gyms, academies, and market spaces to gain first-hand perspectives about the physical activity and dietary habits from a comparative cultural perspective.  They will also learn about and understand how the natural environment contributes to a culture of wellness and traditional medical intervention.

Example Excursions and Activities:

  • Food on food tour of the fresh market in Brasov
  • Visits to local academies and schools to observe and learn about daily physical activity and dietary habits of Romanians
  • Trip to the painted monasteries of Moldova
  • Meeting and learning from managers at local gyms to understand the exercise habits of Romanians
  • Visit to Dracula castle to learn about and taste the diet of Transylvania
  • Walking excursions of fortified castles, the Black Church, and other sites to learn about traditional food and local history

Program Application and $720.00 Program Deposit: Due March 24, 2017
1st Program Payment of $720: Due March 24, 2017
2nd Program Payment of $707.08 + $40.00 mandatory travel insurance fee: Due March 31, 2017

Refund information:

Once accepted to the program, all deposits and program payments are non-refundable.
