As home to the Panama Canal – one of the world’s most strategic shipping and choke points – the country of Panama serves as a prime location for illustrating challenges unique to a developing state with a services sector economy. Recent events surrounding the release of the “Panama Papers” and expansion of the Panama Canal will help to emphasize the current application of knowledge related to international logistics and financial services. Students will have the opportunity, as well, to hear from representatives at leading businesses in the country, learn more about the impact of the Colon Free Trade Area on Panama’s import and export services, and see how decades of U.S. involvement in the country influenced its development.
The week-long trip will be based in urban Panama City, the capital of Panama. Students will study in this city and about this country in order to gain first-hand and comparative perspectives on the challenges faced by operating businesses in an international setting, as well as discover regionally different practices and approaches to business, politics, and culture.
