Meal options: NUFS does not offer a meal or dining plan for purchase, though there are on-campus canteens where students can purchase convenient snacks and meals.  Grocery stores and restaurants are plentiful in Nagoya, and offer easy and cost-effective access to food.  Kitchens provided in the dormitories offer students the opportunity to cook for themselves, if they prefer to do so.

Estimated Cost of Participation: Students pay their tuition, fees, and medical insurance costs to Georgia Southern, and can access their financial aid while studying abroad.  The cost of accommodations and additional services will be paid directly to NUFS.  Click here to view the breakdown of fees and estimated expenses for a term at NUFS.

How to Apply
In order to apply to participate on the exchange to NUFS, students will need to carefully complete and submit the forms/information listed below.  All materials should be submitted to the Office of International Programs & Services by the posted deadline.  Students are encouraged to submit all items together.

  1. Georgia Southern Application for Exchange
  2. NUFS Application Form
  3. NUFS Personal Reference Form
  4. NUFS Housing Application Form

  10. Copy of your passport information page
  11. Four (4) Passport photos

Students who submit all materials by the deadline and meet the eligibility requirements will be invited to the Office of International Programs & Services for a brief interview before committee.

Once formally selected to participate in the exchange program to NUFS, students will need to complete the NUFS Medical Information Form, NUFS Medical Liability Release Agreement, NUFS Exchange Student Scholarship Application Form, and provide a bank statement with proof of funding.  Students planning to study for one semester should be prepared to document the equivalent of 200,000 Japanese Yen; those studying for two semesters should document the equivalent of 400,000 Japanese Yen.  Do not complete or submit this documentation until notified by the OIPS staff, as it is date-sensitive.

How to Search for Courses
Students will find that NUFS is quite accommodating of the course needs of international exchange students.  Unless granted permission by the OIPS, students going on exchange will choose the Japanese Language & Culture Program.

To find courses, students should use either the pages for JLCP to select from the Japanese Language Core, Japanese Language Elective, and Japanese Studies courses.  On this page, students will see a course list that they can download and view.  Once the course list is downloaded and opened, you will then see the list of course titles, the credit hour value for each course, and the term in which it is offered.

Students should note that unless explicitly noted Japanese Studies courses are taught in English.  These courses may not be used to satisfy requirements for the major or minor.

Understanding Grades and Credits
Students must take the equivalent of at least 12 Georgia Southern credit hours while abroad.  In the Japanese system, courses credits are typically calculated similarly to the U.S. system.  So 3 credits at NUFS is the equivalent of 3 Georgia Southern credit hours.  So students should plan to take 4-5 courses while attending NUFS during the semester.

Grades will also transfer back as they equate to the grading scale at Georgia Southern.  To see how grades transfer from NUFS to Georgia Southern, click here.
