Center for International Studies

Dr. Charles Crouch, contact for the European Union Center, recently issued European Union Studies Certificates to:

  • Danielle Smith For Successful Completion of the Certificate Program Courses in Foreign Language (German).

  • Maureen Wilson For Successful Completion of the Certificate Program Courses in Foreign Language (Spanish).

The certificate in European Union Studies is operated under the supervision of the European Council of the University System of Georgia. The program is open to all institutions and students of the University System as well as to professionals with an undergraduate degree.

Why enroll in the program?????

♦ To prove professional expertise to potential employers and graduate schools. Indeed, students have been offered jobs simply because they had an EU Studies certificate.

♦ To participate in an award-winning program. The EU Studies certificate received the Chancellor’s Award for Collaborative Excellence (1999) and the ACE/AT&T Award for Using Technology to Internationalize the Curriculum (2003).

♦ To build your résumé by earning a credential from a European university. Since the EU is the largest international investor in Georgia (accounting for 63% of all foreign investment) it is the area to study if you are interested in a job in international relations, business, or education. In 2005, 1,125 European companies had offices in Georgia.

♦ To take online courses with students in Europe without leaving Georgia. The University of Munich is a participating member of the program (http://www.gsi.uni-muenchen.de/studium/eusc/).

Set Yourself Apart from Others!

Course Schedule

Students can take courses in one of two ways. First, students can take some or all of the courses in an online format. These courses enroll students from across the University System of Georgia and often with the University of Munich. Students at 23 institutions in the University System are able to enroll for the online courses and pay tuition at their home institution, meaning there is no extra cost! The EU Studies campus representative establishes an equivalent course for the online offering. The equivalent can be a Special Topics, Independent Study, or other relevant course. The campus representative, or designated faculty member, is listed as the instructor-of-record while actual instruction is provided by the online professor.

Curriculum

Admission

A certificate in European Union Studies can be earned in one of two ways. Under the academic track, a certificate is taken in tandem with an undergraduate degree program. Students from all academic majors are eligible to participate so long as they possess a minimum 2.75 cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA). It should be noted that some institutions permit the certificate to substitute for an academic minor. Under the professional track, non-degree students—such as business executives—are eligible to enroll in the program upon proof of a valid undergraduate degree from an accredited institution on the condition that they fulfill the minimum GPA requirement of 2.75.

Under either track, an application to the program cannot be made until successful completion of the following: (1) an introductory course on the European Union (EU) with a grade of "C" or better, (2) 30 semester hours of academic credit, and (3) a course in World History, Western Civilization, or Global Issues. The latter course must be approved by an institution's campus representative to the EU Studies program as containing sufficient content on Europe and European topics.
