Keimyung String Quartet Introduction The Keimyung University String Quartet consists of outstanding senior students drawn from the Keimyung Chamber Ensemble.

In February 2012 the quartet had the honor of being taught by Professor Robin Ireland, a prominent viola player and educator who now plays with the Primrose Piano Quartet. Professor Ireland’s master class provided opportunities for several concerts which culminated in a joint concert with the Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. The students are also senior members of Keimyung Symphony Orchestra which is managed by Professor Kwak-seung, a distinguished professor of the Keimyung’s College of Music and Performing Arts. The quartet premiered the music of Mahler at the Keimyung Art Center in May 2012, and it will participate in Keimyung University’s recital this coming October 2012.

Korean Traditional Dance Team Introduction Keimyung University's Korean Traditional Dance team was established in 1984. Under the guidance of Professor Chang Yoo Kyung, students and alumni of the department participates the team. The dance team endeavors to preserve and develop Korean dance and to build their characters as professional dancers through a variety of the performances locally and worldwide

Since its foundation, the Traditional Dance Team has performed in various national and international dance festivals and events including 2002 FIFA Confederations Cup Korea/Japan, 2003 Daegu Universiade, and 2011 Daegu AAF World Athlete Championship. The team has toured Spain, the US, Denmark, China, Japan, Germany, Kazakhstan, and Portugal, and contributes to the recognition and advancement of Korean tradition dance worldwide. Program * Puchae Ch'um (The Bamboo Fan Dance) - This creative dance based on the Korean traditional dance was combined the geometrical composition with the modern rhythmic feeling. The first performance was held in November 1954. It has become the most representative and popular form of Korean dance. The whole dance preceded by the elegant sound of the folding and opening fan reflects the artificiality and the nature, the splendor and the naivety signifying Korean expression. * Gum-moo (Sword Dance) - The Sword Dance is a beautiful dance composed of peaceful and soft motions utilizes swords without the warlike atmosphere associated with such weapons. * The Sound of Korea - Touching people's hearts and sweeping over people's souls, traditional Korean drumming is very powerful, rich, and exhilarating. All the audience fell into a flutter at the sound and experience of this quintessential Korean art. The resonance of the traditional Korean sounds and dances fill the air.

Taekwondo Demonstration Team Introduction Keimyung University’s Taekwondo Demonstration Team, under the direction of Professor Lee Kyu-hyung, was founded in 1998 and has been conducting demonstrations within Korea and worldwide ever since.

Grandmaster Lee Kyu-hyung was a head of national Taekwondo demonstration team, and directed Taekwondo demonstrations at the opening ceremony of the 10th Asian Games in Seoul in 1986, the opening ceremony of the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul, and a special performance for Queen Elizabeth II during her first visit to Korea in 1999. The team conducts annually over 50 demonstrations in various events and overseas tours, and has been recognized as one of the best Taekwondo demonstration teams in Korea. Notable demonstrations have included performances at 2011 World Taekwondo Championship, and 2011 IAAF World Athlete Championship, and in 2008, the team was awarded a special commendation by President George Bush. Since the team’s founding, 58 of its members have been selected as members of Korea's national Taekwondo team.

Georgia Southern University's Model United Nations delegation earned multiple honors at the world's largest Model U.N. simulation held in New York City this past weekend.

The National Model United Nations Conference included more than 600 delegations from every continent (except Antarctica.) Of those, the Georgia Southern University delegation was named an Outstanding Delegation and was recognized for Outstanding Position Papers.

"The numerous awards and recognitions the Georgia Southern University Model U.N. delegation received placed them in the top one percent of all the delegations who attended this year's event," said Georgia Southern Model U.N. faculty director and political science professor Barry Balleck. "Once again our students have proven their ability to compete on an international level against some of the most respected institutions in the world."

In addition to the Outstanding Delegation and Outstanding Position Paper awards, the Georgia Southern delegates participating in the General Assembly 2nd committee were chosen by their peers to address more than 600 students at the opening of one session of the Model United Nations General Assembly.

Georgia Southern was also recognized as one of only seven schools which have had 40 or more years of constant participation in the National Model United Nations Conference.

Matthew Walker

April 20, 2009 - Matthew Walker, a Georgia Southern student alumni, is gaining important experience doing his Internship in Stockholm, Sweden from January to May. He is fascinated traveling overseas and learning about a new culture and a professional environment with higher expectations for him. "My first day at work at the Embassy was fast-paced and full of a lot of new things to remember. Everyone was excited to meet the new intern and eager to put me to work. I was able to meet with many of the Counselors on my first day and even sat down with the Deputy Chief of Mission to welcome me to the Embassy". Matt, who did a Master on Public Administration in GSU, values his experience with the Center for International Studies as a Graduate Assistant. "I miss everyone in the Center and thank you all for preparing me for this internship. I feel comfortable taking on the responsibilities of this internship because of the skills I've learned through working in the Center and being exposed to all types of situations".

Nagoya University visitors	March 02, 2009 - The Center for International Studies was visited by Nagoya University of Foreign Studies (NUFS) representatives. During their stay (February, 23th – 27th), they visited the Chinese and the English as a Second language classrooms, had lunch at the International Conversation Hour, attended Brown Bag Series, among others.

January 28, 2009 - Georgia Southern University honors student Rose Marie Sheahan has been awarded the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship. Sheahan, an International Studies major and University Honors Program student, will use the award for study at Nagoya University of Foreign Studies in Japan.

The Gilman award is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, and the Institute of International Education. Sheahan is the fifth Georgia Southern University student recipient of a U.S. Department of State award in the past two years. Growing up in rural Springfield, Georgia, Sheahan had dreamed of traveling to Japan. “I have always been fascinated with Japan’s culture and language and wanted to learn more about this vastly different society,” said Sheahan. Departing on March 12, 2009, Sheahan will take part in academic programs at Nagoya University of Foreign Studies that focus on Japanese language and culture.

Ryan Evans

September 22, 2008 - Ryan Evans, a 2007 B.A., International Studies graduate of Georgia Southern University, recently received one of three prestigious merit-based fellowships from the prestigious Elliot School of International Affairs at Georgia Washington University. Of the 1800 applicants for the program, Ryan was listed near the top of the 340 students admitted in the Fall 2008 class.

Katalin Patonai

April 14, 2008 - Katalin Patonai has returned to her native Hungary to pursue a master's degree in ecology, but the young scientist is still using the knowledge she acquired as a student at Georgia Southern. Patonai recently won first place in her division at the International Life Sciences Students' Conference hosted by the University of Ljubljana in Slovenia, the honor coming for research she conducted as an undergraduate assistant to Georgia Southern biology professor Sophie George. Patonai attended Georgia Southern on a Georgia Rotary Student Program scholarship, which provides assistance to international students. She was also the recipient of a Paulson Student Research Award, presented annually by the Office of Undergraduate Research in the Allen E. Paulson College of Science and Technology.

Patonai and George conducted their research at two locations: one at Tybee Island, near Savannah, and the other at Crooked River State Park, just north of St. Marys. Now a graduate student at Eotvos Lorand University in Budapest, Hungary, Patonai has fond memories of her experience at Georgia Southern. “I was fortunate to participate in great classes, memorable field trips and research projects,” Patonai said. “I enjoyed the extensive facilities, which offered many more resources than had been available to me.”

Aron Price

April 14, 2008 - One year after finishing tied for second place in the same 2007 Nationwide Tour event, former Georgia Southern University student Aron Price now stands as the 2008 Livermore Valley Wine Country Champion, marking his first career Nationwide title since turning pro in 2005. Going into the final and fourth round tied for second place, Sunday, April 6, Price shot an even par to stay at 5-under 283. With a four-stroke lead, J.J. Killeen, who had led the field after each of the previous three rounds, had a rough final stretch and finished the tournament tied with Price, which forced a playoff. The two remained tied after the first sudden-death hole, both carding a par 4 on hole 18. Price repeated his performance the second time around on the same hole, but Killeen’s missed putt for par gave the Sydney, Australia native his first such victory, and a piece of the $600,000 purse.

With the win and a purse winning share of $108,000, Price made a huge jump in the money standings from 48th to fourth place, bringing his year-to-date winnings to $124,893. Now with six tournaments under his belt since January, the win marks Price’s first top-10 and second top-25 finish so far this year. “It feels good,” said Price of his recent victory. “I knew that if I could just hang in there I knew I’d be able to compete. I knew how to handle the shots from last year’s competition. It was almost like a practice round last year. I knew I had the advantage over the other guys.” With one Nationwide Tour victory under his belt, Price is looking for the second and third wins that will qualify him for play in the PGA Tour.

April 10, 2008 - A national program created by President Georgia W. Bush, the Volunteer Service Award recognizes the valuable contributions that volunteers make to the nation through various types of community service.

Georgia Southern students who track their volunteer hours through the University's Office of Student Leadership and Civic Engagement are eligible for the President's Volunteer Service Award. Students who accumulate at least 100 hours of service receive the award.

The following student earned the President's Volunteer Service Award by logging at least 100 hours of service between Feb. 1,2007, and Jan. 31,2008. The student will be presented with the President's Volunteer Service Award at Georgia Southern's annual Volunteer Recognition Banquet on Thursday, April 17.
