A Personal Reflection on the 2008 ISSOTL Conference
The 5th International Society for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (ISSOTL) Conference was held in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada in October 2008. The theme of the conference was “Celebrating Connections: Learning, Teaching, Scholarship". The conference offered a myriad of opportunities for learning, growing and making connections with four days of keynote speakers, concurrent sessions and poster presentations.

I am an Associate Professor in the Department of Biology at Georgia Southern University; my background and training are in molecular microbiology. I received a Ph.D. in Bacteriology from the University of Wisconsin – Madison, and completed post-doctoral training in bacterial pathogenesis at the same institution. My SoTL research focuses on productive infusion of molecular biology content and skills into the curriculum. Efforts began in advanced undergraduate courses and are currently being pursued at the introductory undergraduate level and in high schools. Learning outcomes for all projects have been/are being rigorously evaluated using mixed-method assessments. I was awarded university and college Awards for Excellence in Contribution to Instruction in recognition of my efforts at Georgia Southern University.
