How Do Management Students Prefer to Learn? Why Should We Care?

This paper reports the findings of a study of the learning styles of students in the operations management class at a regional comprehensive university in southeastern United States. Extant learning styles are found to be highly diverse and differ by student gender. However, in contrast to at least one prior study, the learning styles of our respondents did not differ by student major. Five areas of opportunity for future research arising from the results of this study are identified in the paper’s conclusion.

I am currently an Assistant professor of Operations Management at Georgia Southern University. My Ph.D. was earned at University of Minnesota (2006) with educational psychology and statistics as supporting fields. I’ve been awarded scholarly recognitions by professional organizations such as Institute for Supply Management and Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals. I’ve also won various awards through the Georgia Southern University Center for Excellence in Teaching. My disciplinary research focuses on disruption, sustainability and coordination issues in supply management and is published in Purchasing and Supply Management Journal, International Journal of Logistics Systems and Management, Electronic Market and other journals.

I am currently a Professor of Operations Management at Georgia Southern University and previously taught at Miami University (1990-2001). My Ph.D. was earned at Clemson University (1989). I’ve won awards for excellence in undergraduate and graduate instruction and have authored or co-authored instructional materials including the OM texts Integrated Operations Management: A Supply Chain Perspective, 2e (2007), Integrated Operations Management: Adding Value for Customers (2001), and other books. My disciplinary research, mainly focused on Operations Strategy, Quality Management and Environmental Issues in OM, is published in The Journal of Operations Management, Production and Operations Management, The International Journal of Operations and Production Management, The International Journal of Production Economics and other journals.
