Abstract

5.5 – Room 2911
Create-a-Teen Storyline, My SoTL in Educational Psychology (pr-1)
Kathryn Penrod (South Dakota State University): Kathryn.penrod@sdstate.edu

Participants will learn about the teaching method called Storyline, its use internationally, in my college educational psychology course, and my SoTL research evaluating its effectiveness. My students and I co-construct a fictitious teenager using key concepts related to learning, identity development, and motivation. During this presentation participants will be given an opportunity to complete a few of the tasks that my students complete regarding their fictitious teenager. They will be able to share their thinking and consider how this method allows students to make the concepts they are studying relevant and meaningful. Participants will also be able to read some of the comments made by those interviewed as a part of the SoTL research to determine and consider how this strategy enhances student learning. A brief discussion about Vygotsky's concept of play as a part of learning and its value in creating a need to know will also be included.
