Abstract
A Tale of Two Courses: Renovating Courses for Significant Learning
Denise Pinette Domizi (University of Georgia): dpinette@uga.edu
Rebecca Mullis (University of Georgia): rmm@FCS.UGA.EDU
Using Dee Fink's model of backward course design for integrated learning, each member of a year-long faculty learning community (FLC) designed or redesigned a course. Participants initially focused on critically examining what they wanted students to know, do, think and feel five years after taking their respective classes. Once participants established and refined course goals, they turned to designing teaching and learning activities and assessments to help students to meet those goals. This poster presents the results of two of the (re)designed courses, one on American literature and one on nutrition education, highlighting the purpose and goals of the (re)designed courses and outlining the changes that were made to the courses as a result. Finally, it shows how students' learning was measured in terms of the goals of the course and evaluates how well the learning goals were achieved based on the redesign.
