Abstract

SoTL and 3D Immersive Environments [pr-2]
C. Edward Watson (Virginia Tech): edwatson@vt.edu
David Dannenberg (Virginia Tech): ddannenb@vt.edu

Web-based multi-user virtual environments (MUVEs), such as Teleplace and Second Life, provide an immersive, synchronous means through which faculty can teach students. Several universities have invested heavily in MUVEs; however, given its emergent nature, the efficacy of this means of instruction has yet to be fully examined.  As an exercise in problem-based learning regarding the scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL), this session will begin by defining the parameters of systems like Second Life and include a brief demonstration.  Then, through the presentation of real-life case studies of MUVE usage in higher education, participants will collaboratively explore and develop methodologies for participating in SoTL in online immersive environments.  Participants will rethink and extend their conceptions of SoTL and gain new perspectives regarding ways SoTL can be employed in technology-enriched environments.  No prior knowledge or experience with MUVEs is expected of participants.
