Learning to Think Like a Teacher: A Study of the Need for More Help in Early Professional Socialization [pr-1]
Marlissa Hughes Stauffer (Ohio Dominican University): stauffem@ohiodominican.edu

The federal call for accountability has created the need to see a clearer relationship between what is done in pre-service programs and what the pre-service teachers are able to do once they begin teaching. Pre-service teachers consider student teaching the most important part of their pre-service training, but schools of education often invest little in that important semester other than assigning the placement and providing periodic feedback. In the session I will explain what my research revealed about how student teachers developed their ability to think like teachers about their practice and their desire to have more help with learning how to teach. I will involve participants in the pursuit of how to make dialogue-reflection and explicit negotiation more a part of an early professional socialization program (such as student teaching).
