Experiential Learning
One of the ways the honors experience differs from the traditional university experience is through the honors experiential learning component. A hallmark of the University Honors Program involves bringing ideas to life. As a result, honors students are required to participate in one experiential learning opportunity per year to enhance their undergraduate education.
Experiential Learning Options:
Service-Learning Project
Study Abroad Experience
Undergraduate Research Project
University Sponsored Alternative Spring Break Trip
Work Abroad Experience
Internship (unpaid)
Significant Campus Leadership Experience (officer position with a registered campus student organization or LeaderShape)
Experiential Learning Completion Steps:
To successfully receive credit for an experience, honors students will need to complete each of the following steps:
- Pre-register for each experience during the first two weeks of the semester when the experience will take place by using the Honors Experiential Learning Sign-Up Form. Summer projects should be pre-registered before the end of the spring semester.
- Participate in an experience that should last a total of at least 25 hours over the course of one semester or summer. Students should not receive any compensation for the experience.
- Submit an Honors Experiential Learning Reflection Packet to the University Honors Program office. Packets are due by the last day of classes during the semester when the experience took place. Response packets for summer experiences are due by September 1.
Each Honors Experiential Learning Reflection Packet should include all of the following:
- Coversheet with student name, Eagle ID number, year, major and telephone number plus volunteer site, site coordinator/project supervisor name, telephone number and e-mail address.
- A 500 word thoughtful response reflecting on how the experience contributed to the student's overall university education.
- Letter from site coordinator/project supervisor on organization or university letterhead verifying completion of experiential learning project lasting at least 25 hours.
* Students who do not complete all of the above listed steps for each experience will not receive credit
