Alternative Spring Break 2010 Honors Alternative Break: Explore International Atlanta!
May 9-14, 2010
The University Honors Program Alternative Break Trip will provide an international experience in Atlanta this May during the week-long break after the conclusion of the spring semester. Participating students will have the opportunity to explore this growing international metropolitan region through tours, site visits, and a volunteer experience with The International Rescue Committee (and potentially other refugee organizations). Find more information about the IRC Atlanta at http://www.theirc.org/us-program/us-atlanta-ga This trip will be led by Dr. Francis Desiderio, who has extensive research experience on Atlanta and urban environments.
What makes Atlanta an international city? The presence of companies like Coca-Cola, CNN, and Delta certainly assisted in developing Atlanta’s global connections. However, it is the enormous and diverse population growth experienced by the area over the last 20-30 years that has changed the composition of Atlanta.
We will explore the catalysts of this growth, examine the development of international metropolitan Atlanta, and deepen our understanding of urbanization. This trip will challenge your assumptions about Atlanta and about cities in general.
