University Honors Program Curriculum Requirements

Honors First-Year Seminar – FYE 1220H (2 credit hours) First year, first semester
Honors Core Classes (12 credit hours) By end of second year
College/Departmental Honors Requirements* By end of fourth year
(credit hours vary by department)


Students are strongly encouraged to take at least one honors class per semester during their four years. 

*Students in College of Education, History, Political Science, International Studies, International Trade, Chemistry, Biology, Geology and Geography, Construction Management, Civil Engineering Technology, and Health and Kinesiologywill follow the established Departmental Honors Sequence.  Students in all other majors will complete 9 credit hours of contracted upper-division classes in the major and the honors capstone project.

University Honors Program Grade Point Average Requirement
Students must maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.3 for all four years. 

University Honors Program Standing Check
Following the fall semester of the first year only, students who have a cumulative grade point average of less than 2.0 will be removed and any University Honors Program scholarships rescinded.  Students with a cumulative grade point average between 2.0 – 3.3 will receive a warning.

Beyond the first semester of the first year, students with a cumulative grade point average below 3.3 will be removed and any University Honors Program scholarships rescinded.  In addition, students who did not complete at least one experiential learning project between the previous May 15 and May 15 will be removed and any University Honors Program scholarships rescinded.

University Honors Program Experiential Learning Requirements
Regardless of when a student enters, he or she must complete at least one experiential learning project per year (between May 15 and May 15).  A total of four projects are needed prior to graduation.  Each project should last a minimum of 25 hours and must not involve compensation. 

Following the completion of each project, students are required to submit a packet to the University Honors Program office containing the following by the last day of classes during the semester when the project took place (responses for summer projects are due by September 1).

Undergraduate Research
University Sponsored Alternative Spring Break
Work Abroad
Internship (unpaid)
Significant Leadership Experience [officer position with registered campus student organization (except SAGE) or LeaderShape]

Students interested in pursuing a project beyond those listed above should contact the Director or Assistant Director in writing prior to beginning the project and must receive approval from the University Honors Program.
