First-Year Experience

Peer Leading in the New FYE 1220

FYE 1220 (First-Year Seminar) will replace GSU 1210 (University Orientation) in Fall 2008.

Operationally, FYE 1220 will have two component parts that together total two credit hours.  Seventy-five percent of the course will be comprised of an academic, theme-based seminar.  Faculty will develop a special-topics course suitable for first-year students.  Students, in turn, select their section of FYE 1220 based on the theme for the course.  The idea is that all students should take a course that truly interests them in a format that promotes interaction during their first year.  In this portion of the course, students will develop research skills revolving around information literacy, documentation and avoiding plagiarism.

The balance of the course, 25 percent of the total or about eight contact hours, will look in many respects like a condensed GSU 1210; we'll call it the "extended orientation" component of FYE 1220.  Here students will learn about campus resources, time management, study skills, and academic advising and reflect more broadly on their college experience.  Some of this material will be conveyed over WebCT Vista.

Peer leaders will serve in the "extended orientation" portion of the course.  In cases where faculty and peer leaders agree on it (generally when the peer has an expressed interest in the theme for the specific section), peer leaders may serve in both portions of the course.  Peer leaders will learn more about available options when they accept their positions.
