Peer Instructor Position Description

Under the supervision of the First-Year Experience program and the faculty member teaching the FYE 1220 course, Peer Instructors craft a syllabus, lead classroom discussions and activities, and assess student work for the extended orientation portion of the FYE 1220:  First-Year Seminar course, which meets one hour a week for the first eight weeks of the semester.  Please note:  Students serving as a Peer Instructor may not also serve as a Peer Mentor.
Specific Responsibilities of the Peer Instructor
  • Attending all training sessions in the Spring and the kick-off meeting in the Fall.
  • Serving as a resource for students in their section of FYE 1220; holding posted office hours in the First-Year Experience suite to facilitate this.
  • Refer students to appropriate resources and professionals on campus based on their needs.
  • Communicating to FYE weekly about the progress of their course
Time Commitments
  • Spring 2009:  Peer Instructors will participate in roughly 12-15 hours of training on Friday afternoons after Spring Break (March 27, April 3, 17 & 24, and May 1, 2-5 p.m.).  Additionally, Peer Instructors will be paired with a FYE 1220 faculty member teaching the seminar portion of the course compatible with their fall schedule, and will meet with that professor during the Spring to begin to develop a relationship. 
  • Summer 2009:  Peer Instructors will submit a draft of their syllabus to FYE by August 1.
  • Fall 2009:  In addition to teaching the course during their assigned times (one hour a week for the first eight hours of the semester), Peer Instructors will:  participate in kick-off meeting from 2-4 p.m. on Friday, August 14; hold weekly office hours in the FYE office while their course is meeting; and make weekly contact with the FYE office concerning how the course is progressing.
Requirements

To be considered, applicants must have:

  • Served as a Peer Leader for FYE 1220 or GSU 1210 before.
  • Have a minimum GPA of 3.0
  • A clear judicial record.
What's in it for me?
Peer Instructors receive a $200 stipend for teaching FYE 1220, paid after their responsibilities are concluded.  They may also elect to enroll in FYE 2212: Teaching Internship in First-Year Experience for which they earn one-hour of elective credit in the Fall semester.
Application Process

Applications to be a Peer Instructor are due February 6.  To apply students must submit an application through the Student Employment Center and an additional application specific to FYE.  If you are applying to be a Peer Instructor (PI) and would also like to be considered to be a Peer Leader or Peer Mentor if you are not selected as a PI, then you only need to apply for the Peer Instructor position through the Student Employment Center (you do NOT need to submit the separate Student Employment Center application for Peer Leader/Peer Mentor position).  You can express your willingness to be considered for the Peer Leader/Peer Mentor position through the FYE-specific application.  If you have additional questions about the Peer Instructor program, contact Heath Browning at hbrowning@georgiasouthern.edu.
