Previous First-Year Seminar Themes
FYE 1220 themes are designed to pair students who share an interest in the theme with each other and the faculty member who developed it. Part of the rationale is to help students make connections with others at their new institution. But there is also an academic motive. Developing basic information literacy and academic research skills are at the center of the common learning outcomes of the course. Students more readily learn these competencies when researching subjects they enjoy.
To facilitate this process, faculty teaching a thematic seminar (one of two course models) prepare a 50-125 word theme description that describes their theme and FYE emails students in advance of SOAR so they can rank-order their top preferences. Each fall semester, only 2-3 seats in each section are available at each SOAR session. See below for theme lists from previous semesters:
