Early Alert/Midterm Grades

One recommendation of the 2006 FYE Faculty Task Force was to work to make midterm grades more effective.  With the assistance of the Registrar's Office, IT Services and the Student Affairs and Enrollment Management Technical Support staff, First-Year Experience is pleased to announce two modifications to the midterm grade process designed to achieve this objective.

More Specific Options for U Grades

Instead of only having two options for midterm grades (S and U), faculty can now choose from seven additional early alert/midterm grade codes that more specifically describe the reason for a student’s unsatisfactory performance in a course.  Faculty will continue to have the option of assigning the more basic U grade.  The full menu of early alert/midterm grades now includes the following options that appear in Faculty WINGS in a drop-down menu as in the past:

S Satisfactory
U Unsatisfactory
UA Unsatisfactory attendance
UG Unsatisfactory grade(s)
UP Unsatisfactory class participation
UAG Unsatisfactory attendance and grades
UAP Unsatisfactory attendance and participation
UGP Unsatisfactory grades and participation
UAGP Unsatisfactory attendance, grades and participation

“Early Alert” Window for Fall 2009:  September 8 through October 2

Faculty may submit midterm grades for one or all of their students as early as September 8 this Fall.  When entered this early, the midterm grades function as an “early alert” to problems.  Faculty may choose to announce to their classes that they’ve posted these early alert grades, and the advisement centers will follow up with students in their colleges who receive some version of an unsatisfactory “early alert.”  As in the past, midterm grades for all first-year students won’t be due until the 34th day of classes (October 2 this year), but earlier submission allows for more meaningful intervention.

First-Year Experience welcomes feedback on the early alert/midterm grade system.  Contact Chris Caplinger (478-1456 or caplinca@georgiasouthern.edu) or your college's representative(s) on the FYE Faculty Task Force.
