Calculating your GPA

This exercise will demonstrate how to calculate your Georgia Southern GPA.  Read through this example.  In the sample quiz, you will be asked to calculate a GPA in a similar fashion.

A = 4
B = 3
C = 2
D = 1
F = 0

To determine his GPA, Gus first lists his grades in the table in column #2.  Then using the key, he assigned a numeric value to each grade in column #3 (note, this is not the percentage he received in the class!  See the key above for assigning the proper numeric grade).  Finally Gus lists the number of credit hours for each class in column #4.

To calculate his GPA, Gus must multiply Column #3 by Column #4.  He lists the result in Column #5, Quality Points.  After calculating his quality points for each class, he totals both his number of hours and his quality points.

The final step is dividing the sum of Column #5 by the sum of Column #4.

Note that withdrawals do not count in the calculation of GPA.  They do, however, count against “attempted hours” for HOPE and other purposes (see link 5.2 in the Vista module).

Gus Eagles’ Fall GPA is 2.846.  His GPA is calculated on 13 hours, although he’s earned only 12 credit hours (because he failed BIOL 1210).  He’s attempted 16 hours (the 13 hours on which his GPA is based plus the three hours of HIST 2110 from which he withdrew).  Gus is in Good Academic Standing.

Calculating a GPA beyond the first Semester

To calculate a GPA beyond the first semester, Gus will must repeat the above process but add the GPA hours and Quality points from past semesters.  For previous semesters, this information can be found in your Web Transcript in WINGS.  See below for an example:
