FYE Awards, 2018

Each year, First-Year Experience invites the university community to submit nominations for the FYE awards, which recognize excellence in the teaching and mentoring of first-year students at Georgia Southern University. Because the period under consideration includes Fall 2017, before consolidation, the awards for this academic year are only open to faculty, staff and students on the Statesboro campus. FYE looks forward to including faculty, staff and students from the Armstrong and Liberty campuses in the awards process in 2019.

Outstanding Advocate for First-Year Students

The award recognizes one full-time faculty member and one staff member or administrator who have made significant contributions to the academic and/or personal lives of first-year students. While nominations of FYE 1220 and FYE 1410 faculty are certainly welcome, nominees need not teach FYE 1220 or FYE 1410. The criteria are purposely open-ended to encompass the full range of diverse ways in which faculty and staff promote and facilitate the success of first-year students. The initial deadline for nominations is Friday, March 2. Supporting nominations for faculty and staff already nominated may be submitted through Monday, March 19 at 5 p.m.

The 2018 faculty and staff Outstanding Advocates for First-Year Students will each receive a plaque and up to $1500 to attend the 38th Annual Conference on the First-Year Experience (February 16-19 in Las Vegas) or another conference relating to student success, global education, or pedagogical practice. Travel must conclude by deadline for disbursing funds in fiscal 2019 (generally around June 25).

Note: Individuals who hold faculty rank but are 12-month administrators are considered as administrators and not faculty for the purposes of this award.

Process
  1. Any member of the Georgia Southern community may submit a nomination. Initial nominations must be received by Friday, March 2. Nominators may wish to consider recruiting others to support the nomination they submit.
  2. First-Year Experience will then approach supervisors of nominees and offer them the opportunity to write a supporting nomination and solicit additional nominations from others. Nominations will be accepted through this website by Monday, March 19 at 5 p.m. for nominees who were initially nominated as in step 1, above.
  3. FYE will also contact nominees shortly after March 2 to inform them of their nomination. If they choose, they may opt out of being considered. Unlike in previous years, no formal written response is required from nominees in order to be considered.

FYE Peer Leader of the Year

This award recognizes a peer leader who works in harmony with his or her FYE 1220 professor to provide a quality classroom experience while engaging students in the overall Georgia Southern community and serving as a positive role model. Peer leaders for FYE 1220 sections in Fall 2017 or Spring 2018 are eligible to receive this award. The initial deadline for nominations is Friday, March 2. Supporting nominations for peer leaders already nominated may be submitted through Monday, March 19 at 5 p.m.

The 2018 Peer Leader of the Year will receive $100. Students who served as peer instructors are not eligible.

Process
  1. Any member of the Georgia Southern community may submit a nomination. Initial nominations must be received by Friday, March 2. Nominators may wish to consider recruiting others to support the nomination they submit.
