Phi Eta Sigma Scholarships
Phi Eta Sigma offers four (4) $200 scholarships to members
of the local chapter. The three strongest nominees will be
eligible to be forwarded to the national scholarship
competition, where awards range from $1,000 to $10,000. The
criteria for awarding the local scholarships are the same as the
national criteria, which are:
-
Strong academic record;
-
Academic recognition;
-
Evidence of creative ability or
uniqueness;
-
Participation in on or off
employment, campus service, leadership or other
extracurricular groups; and,
-
Phi Eta Sigma involvement (the most
important criterion).
In order to promote involvement among
the “grass roots,” two of the recipients must not currently hold
an official office in Phi Eta Sigma. The other two awards may
go to any member of the chapter.
To apply, complete the
application and secure a letter of recommendation from a
faculty or staff member. Applications are due by January
22 at 5 p.m. to the FYE Office, Williams Center 1001.

General Information
| Phi Eta Sigma is a
national honor society
for college first-year students. Our goal is to recognize and
promote
academic and service excellence among first-year students. The oldest and largest freshman honor society,
Phi Eta Sigma was founded at the University of Illinois on March
22, 1923. We now have more than 350 chapters throughout the
United States and more than 900,000 inducted members. Phi Eta
Sigma was voted membership into the
Association of College Honor
Societies in 1937. Only three societies have had longer continuous
membership. Our members take a great deal of pride in the
accomplishments of our society despite the fact that we have
the lowest induction fee ($30) of any organization in the association.
Because of the increasing performance of Georgia
Southern students overall, the criteria for invitation
to membership has increased this year to a 3.6 GPA for
first-year students enrolled full time in Fall 2008.
On March 8, 2009, the Georgia Southern chapter initiated
317 students in a beautiful ceremony at the Performing
Arts Center with Provost Dr. Linda Bleicken
presiding. To the right, see the stage party
posing with the Phi Eta Sigma crest.

Georgia Southern marked its 18th year as an
active chapter on October 19, 2009.
Members who chose to be active in the
Phi Eta Sigma student organization work in conjunction with the
Conversations with Professors program to promote first-year experience on campus
and are involved with community service activities in the
Statesboro area.

chapter president
Jessica Spaleta or faculty advisor
