General Information
| Phi Eta Sigma is a
national honor society
for college first-year students. Our goal is to recognize and
promote
academic and service excellence among first-year students. The oldest and largest freshman honor society,
Phi Eta Sigma was founded at the University of Illinois on March
22, 1923. We now have more than 350 chapters throughout the
United States and more than 900,000 inducted members. Phi Eta
Sigma was voted membership into the
Association of College Honor
Societies in 1937. Only three societies have had longer continuous
membership. Our members take a great deal of pride in the
accomplishments of our society despite the fact that we have
the lowest induction fee ($30) of any organization in the association.
Because of the increasing performance of Georgia
Southern students overall, the criteria for invitation
to membership has increased this year to a 3.6 GPA for
first-year students enrolled full time in Fall 2008.
On March 8, 2009, the Georgia Southern chapter initiated
317 students in a beautiful ceremony at the Performing
Arts Center with Provost Dr. Linda Bleicken
presiding. To the right, see the stage party
posing with the Phi Eta Sigma crest.

Georgia Southern marked its 18th year as an
active chapter on October 19, 2009.
Members who chose to be active in the
Phi Eta Sigma student organization work in conjunction with the
Conversations with Professors program to promote first-year experience on campus
and are involved with community service activities in the
Statesboro area.
For questions about the organization, contact
chapter president
Jessica Spaleta or faculty advisor
Dr. Chris
Caplinger.
