How large are sections of FYE 1220?
Sections cap at 22 students.

Will there be special sections of FYE 1220 for specific majors?
The nature of the course will often attract students from specific majors to sections with a major-oriented theme.  At SOAR, advisors will encourage students to look to sections taught by faculty in their major.  However, FYE 1220 sections will not be restricted by major.  In part because new students' understanding of majors is often very basic, students' interest in the theme should be the overriding determinant in their selection of a section.

Will there be sections of FYE 1220 reserved for specific populations of students?
In cases where the integrity of the theme-based concept can be preserved, this may be possible; however, the structure imposed by theme-based sections lends itself best to sections open to the entire student population.

Can I link my section of FYE 1220 to another course I'm teaching?
Yes, provided the course is one with sufficient new-student enrollment.  The benefits of linking to faculty and students are worth the additional difficulty linking can create in the registration process.  In cases where there are more than 22 students in the course, FYE will work with departments to link a subset of the other class with FYE 1220.

Is faculty orientation required to teach FYE 1220?
In the past, GSU 1210 faculty orientation was required each year.  In lieu of this for Fall 2008, FYE has opted to offer a variety of workshops, discussion groups, and other resources to faculty rather than to mandate a one-size-fits-all model for faculty.  If you feel you need additional support to be able to teach effectively, please contact FYE (or note the additional support needed on your expression of interest).

I know I would like to teach a section of FYE 1220, but I don't know my theme or my availability.  Should I wait to express interest in teaching?
FYE would appreciate faculty's expressing interest as soon as they know they would like to teach.  The SurveyMonkey form employed to collect expressions of interest will allow you to reenter the form from the computer you initially used and update your responses.  If FYE requires more information in order to set up your section, we will be in touch.

Who can teach the seminar portion of FYE 1220?  Who can teach the extended orientation component?
All full-time faculty may teach the seminar, and administrators who hold credentials to teach in one of the colleges may also teach this component.  Faculty or staff with at least a master's degree may teach the extended orientation component provided they have been on campus for at least a year (this last requirement can be waived in cases where the faculty or staff member has had significant interaction with various offices on campus). For more, see the "Specifics" webpage.

What is the compensation for teaching FYE 1220?
Compensation depends in part on the component of the course taught. See "Compensation for Teaching FYE 1220"
