Compensation for Teaching FYE 1220

The faculty support budget for each section of FYE 1220 is $2,000, of which $1,500 is for the seminar portion and $500 is for the "extended orientation" portion.  Compensation possibilities are different for faculty on academic contracts and for staff/administrators.

Faculty on Academic Contracts

Faculty on traditional academic contracts have a choice:

Option 1
Faculty may receive overload compensation in their last payroll check of the academic semester in which they teach FYE 1220.  The University's share of the payroll taxes will be deducted from the budgeted amount to determine gross pay.  The gross pay will be

  • $464 (for teaching the extended orientation component);
  • $1,393 (for teaching the seminar component); or,
  • $1,857 (for teaching both the seminar and the extended orientation component).

As for all compensation, individual taxes will be deducted from gross pay based on the faculty member’s individual W-9 filing with Human Resources.

Option 2
Because many faculty value the professional development opportunities FYE stipends have provided in the past, faculty may choose to decline compensation in lieu of a departmental transfer to the faculty member's budget unit.  In this case the full budgeted amount will be transferred no later than the sixth week of the semester in which the section is taught, as follows:

  • $500 (for teaching the extended orientation component);
  • $1,500 (for teaching the seminar component); or,
  • $2,000 (for teaching both the seminar and the extended orientation component).

Please note that professional development monies will no longer be administered directly by FYE, a change requested by the Controller because of IRS considerations.  Faculty considering this option should discuss this decision with their unit head.

Faculty indicate which option they select when they express interest in teaching FYE 1220.  They may change this option in writing until the fifth calendar day of the semester in which the course is taught.

Staff/Administrators

Full-time staff or administrators cannot be personally compensated for teaching during the work day when FYE sections are typically offered.  They are already being compensated for their time during these hours.  There is not a mechanism for overload pay for exempt staff as there is for faculty.  For this reason, FYE will initiate transfers for all staff and administrators teaching FYE 1220 as in Option 2, above.
