Convert to PDF (Portable Document Format)

This page will show you how to convert a word processor document to a pdf file. It will also show you how to insert a pdf file into another pdf file.

Where are Computer labs with PDF conversion software?

The Henderson library has Adobe Acrobat Distiller installed on some of the computers in rooms 1300, 1302 and 1308. These rooms are open to students when classes are not in session. The schedule is posted on the classroom doors and service desks.

Free, Online PDF Conversion:

There are online services that offer free PDF conversion. You are welcomed to try these services. Two such services are referenced here:

If you would like to buy a personal copy of Adobe Acrobat Professional version 6.0 (or higher), you can get an educational discount at some sites on the Internet or through Georgia Southern University's bookstore. Shop around for the best price. See buying information below.

Converting Microsoft Word Documents to PDF

Adobe Acrobat Distiller will Convert your documents to a "pdf" file. The file can be opened by anyone who has Adobe Acrobat Reader. The Reader is a free download from Adobe.com, so anyone can install it on their computer.
 
1. Open the Word Document:

2. From the File drop-down menu, select print:

3. From the Printer Dialogue box, select the Adobe Distiller option, and then click OK:

4. You will be prompted to name the file and save it to a location of your choice. Click Save.

5. Notice the little icon with the 3 next to it. The icon represents a printer. As long as you see this printer icon, the document is in the process of being converted to a pdf. Be patient as it could take several minutes to complete the process.

6. When the document is finished, look for the Acrobat icon wherever you chose to save the document. Double click the icon to open the document.

Insert a PDF file into another PDF file

You can create separate documents, and later combine them into one document. You can do this with the word-processed documents and with PDF documents. Below, you will find instructions for inserting a PDF document into another PDF document.

Imagine that you have two PDF documents:

1. Open the PDF document into which you want to insert a another PDF document or page.

2. Open the Document drop-down menu, and look for Insert Pages. Look closer at the options listed under Insert Pages; you will see Extract Pages, Replace Pages and Delete Pages. For now, you will select Insert Pages, but you might experiment with the other options.

3. The "Select File To Insert" dialog box will appear. Look for the file you want to insert. In this example, it is Document 2.pdf. Either double click the file, or click on the Select button.

4. The "Insert Pages" dialog box will appear. In the Location drop-down menu, you can choose before or after. You will also choose where in the document you want to insert the new page. Notice in this example that you will insert the page after page 1. Click OK when you are ready.

5. At first, you won't see any changes. You will have to scroll to the area in the document where you inserted the new page. Here you see document 2 below a page in of document 1. Simply save the document to save your work.
