Introduction |
|
The Center for Online Learning works with academic units on campus to put programs/degrees completely online. For those units that are preparing courses to support a completely online program/degree, the COL will help with the actual construction of the course. Because of limited personnel resources, this service is only available to completely online programs/degrees at this time. We hope to extend this service to all online courses in the future. |
|
| Purpose | |
| The purpose behind the COL's involvement in constructing online courses for online programs/degrees is to insure a high level of quality and compliance with the COL's guidelines for course design. This does not mean, however, that individual faculty who prefer to build their own courses cannot do so, but they must demonstrate an ability to design the course per COL's guidelines. The COL offers training in course design competencies. All courses are subjected to inspection throughout the process and before they are released for teaching/learning. | |
| Scenario: The COL Builds the Course | |
| If the COL builds the course, the faculty will need to go through initial training to learn about best practice and certain pedagogical issues related to online course design, teaching, and learning. This training is outlined in the Instructor Certification section of this site. Part of the training also is to determine due dates for "deliverables" that the faculty must supply to the COL throughout the course building process. Deliverables are the content, overview pages, and more that go into the course. It is imperative that these due dates be followed strickly. | |
| Scenario: The Faculty Member Builds the Course | |
| If a faculty member builds the course, the same rules apply as in the previous scenario. Faculty must be trained, and they must stick to a strict schedule for course and content development. COL guidelines must be followed. Course quality will be monitored throughout the course development process by the COL staff. | |
| Project Management Tracking Worksheet | |
There is a project management worksheet to facilitate compliance with the due dates for content deliverables. For each course that is being developed, the COL will keep a record and review it periodically to insure that course development is progressing in a timely manner. |
