Overview Pages

Recommended Practice

Reasoning

GeorgiaVIEW makes use of learning modules to organize instruction into individual learning units. You can add any type of content that you like, e.g., HTML, Word, PowerPoint, links, PDF, audio/video, etc., to a learning module.

An overview page is used in each learning module to guide the student through the content. Each overview page has four elements:

  1. Title of unit of instruction
  2. General goal for the unit of instruction
  3. Specific objectives (Bloom's taxonomy; tied to program/course objectives)
  4. Activities (Instructions to the students)

What happens if you don't use overview pages? See this important message.

Nota Bene: Overview pages should be HTML, not Word or other types of documents.

The overview page communicates to the students expectations (learning objectives) and what they should do in the learning module (activities). Information, especially activities, should be clear and concise. Giving too much information on this page can create "cognitive overload" and confusion.

Note: Learning objectives are based on Bloom's Taxonomy. If you are not clear on the proper use of Bloom's Taxonomy, you need to read the Bloom's Taxonomy section of this site.

See example of overview page here.

How You Communicate Matters!

Reasoning

It is extremely important that you be consistent in your use of terminology when writing the activities (instructions to the students). The terminology that you use to name your documents and tools in the Table of Contents should be exactly the same same way you refer to them in the "activities" (instructions to the students) in the overview page.

If you are not exactly specific in how you refer to the content and tools in a learning module, you're probably going to create confusion.
