File Naming Conventions

Recommended Practice for Content

Reasoning

You already have a lot of content that you use for your classes. It's is necessary to be consistent in your file naming. For example, if you use PowerPoint handouts as a lecture overview, you might name them with a file naming convention that will help you recognize the file at a glance in the future. In the examples the "M" stands for Module.

Study_Guide_M1.doc

Assignments should be similarly named.

Assignment_1_M1.doc
Assignment_2_M2.doc

It is important to type the file names as you see the examples above because that is what the students will see in your course.

Organization never hurts! In fact, it will speed up the process of building your course.

Developing and using a file naming convention will help you keep track of files.

If you are working with the Center for Online Learning, and the Center is building your course for you, it will facilitate communication about which files go where.

Store Files in Folders on Your PC or Flash Drive

Your course will be divided into learning modules or units. You might want to create folders on your computer or flash (memory) stick to store your content. For example, if you have 16 learning modules in GeorgiaVIEW, you will need to create 16 folders to store the content.

Recommended Practice for GeorgiaVIEW Tools

Reasoning

You will probably use GeorgiaVIEW tools like quizzes, discussions, and assignments. Each time you use a tool, you have to give it a name. For example, say that you are going to create a discussions area for Learning Modules 1, 2, 3, and so on. Each of these discussion areas need to have a unique name. To keep up with the different discussion areas, you'll need to come up with a naming convention. It is best to use short names when possible.

Discussion Area M1
Discussion Area M2

The M1 and M2 mean Module 1 and Module 2.

If you have multiple discussion areas in a single module, use this convention.

Discussion Area 1- M1
Discussion Area 2- M1

If you are requiring your students to work in small groups in a learning module, you use this naming convention.

Discussion Area - Grp 1 - M1
Discussion Area - Grp 2 - M1

There is an area in GeorgiaVIEW where all discussion areas may be viewed at the same time. Using a good naming convention will help you and the students identify the groups.
