Building a Learning Module

Learn how to organize online digital media and resources into learning modules. Tips for email, news, personal account settings, and notifications.

Learning Objectives                                                                            Register

At the end of this workshop you will be able to:

  • Identify the parts and functions of Folio’s interface
  • Change Profile Settings, Notifications, and Account Settings
  • Upload content files to the Manage Files area
  • Create modules and other objects using the Course Builder
  • Create and edit HTML pages
  • Create QuickLinks, insert images as well as audio and video files.
  • Add participants to the Classlist.
  • Activate course content.
  • If time permits, discuss Email and Calendar settings.

Grade book and Grading

Set up and organize your grade book. Tips for grading assignments and calculating final grades.

  • Set up grade books
  • Create course grade schemas
  • Create categories for grade book items
  • Organize and navigate the grade book
  • Edit student grades
  • Edit grade book settings.

Quizzes

Create and regular and randomized quizzes, adjust security settings, and reset quiz attempts.

  • Determine security settings for quiz questions
  • Create random sections for quizzes

Discussions

Create discussion activities, modify discussion properties, and grade student activity.

  • Reply to, edit, and flag discussions

Dropboxes — aka Assignments

Create dropboxes for assignment submission and grading. Tips on using TurnItIn for plagiarism detection.

  • Set up and grade assignment dropboxes
  • Set dropbox properties
  • Edit the “Assignment Instructions” page in the COL template
  • Flag dropbox submissions
  • Grade assignments within the Dropbox tool
  • Enable TurnItIn for plagiarism detection
  • Enable Originality Check for students.

Communications

This workshop will introduce the communication tools within Folio. Participants will learn how to use the News, Classlist, Email, Calendar, and Intelligent Agent tools.

Digital Groups

This workshop will show faculty how to create group assessments like group Dropboxes (Assignments) and/or Group Discussion activities.  it will also include a short review of our Group Strategy document, which is a fine-tuned digital group contact that can be used with group activities, attaching existing digit Rubrics, and grading the group activities.

  • Review best practices for creating group assessment in Folio.
  • Discuss the use of the Team Charter and use of “Freeloader” Reports
  • Create Group Dropboxes
  • Create Group Discussion Activities
  • Link Group Assessments to content

  • Other tips and tricks

Digital Rubrics

This workshop will demonstrate how to create a digital Rubric inside Folio, attach it to a learning activity and using the rubric to grade learning activities.

  • Review best practices for creating effective rubrics
  • Create rubrics using the Folio Rubric tool
  • Attach the Folio Rubric to Dropboxes and Discussion activities
  • Demonstrate how to grade a Dropbox and a Discussion activity using the Folio Rubric.

Kaltura Audio/Video Lectures and Presentations

This workshop will show you how to optimize images and add audio to your PowerPoint lectures and publish it to your course. Upload PowerPoint presentations to Kaltura’s library and ultimately link them back to your course content.

  • Create slide presentations using PowerPoint
  • Narrate PowerPoint Presentation
  • Save presentation in video format
  • Upload to Kaltura
  • Link or embed presentation file(s) to your Folio course
  • Create short videos using the folio webcam (if time permits)

WebEx Web Conferencing

WebEx software includes features like video, audio, desktop application sharing, and content presentation. WebEx provides online users with the ability to be interactive in their online learning environment.

  • Set up a WebEx classroom as a host
  • Identify each participant(s) role
  • Modify settings for hosts, presenters, and participants
  • Demonstrate software tools
  • Invite participants to the classrooms
  • Discuss online classroom etiquettes.

Respondus

Import quizzes directly into Folio from Microsoft Word or text documents.

  • Code existing quizzes developed in Word to prepare for Respondus Import
  • Import Word questions into Folio
  • Publish a Respondus quiz into Folio
  • Link a new quiz to Folio content

BrightSpace D2L Assignment Grader

The purpose of this workshop is to introduce the Desire2Learn (BrightSpace) Assignment Grader Apps for iPad, iOS5, or greater. The D2L (BrightSpace) Assignment Grader gives you the ability to grade from a mobile device online or offline. It provides quick and easy access to assignments allowing you to assess using rubrics, annotate with online comments, and provide personalized text, audio or video feedback.

  • Demonstrate how to markup assignments
  • Publish feedback online or offline

i>Clickers (Student Response System)

Clickers are a great way for professors to gather instantaneous feedback from students without too much disruption into a lecture. Clickers can be used to assess pre and post-lesson knowledge, provide a springboard for class discussions and collect attendance. In this session, you will learn to setup and use i>clickers; run an interactive session and integrate data with Folio.

  • Locate downloadable copies of i<Clicker v.7 and PPT Add-in
  • Locate and set-up a course in i<Clicker
  • Run an interactive session
  • Grade using the iGrader tool
  • Import roster and grades into i<Clicker and Folio

Google Fridays

Master the suite of Google applications. This session will provide an overview of the features of Google Apps, Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Hangout, Google Slides, Google Sites, Using Departmental accounts, YouTube with Google, and more.

  3. Log in as a Student.
  4. Enter your Georgia Southern username and password.
  5. Search for and locate the event you would like to attend and click the title.
  6. Click Add to Cart. There is no fee.
  7. Click Checkout.
