Folio Foundations Workshops Catalog

Building a Learning Module

Using learning modules in Folio allows us to organize instructional content in our online courses. Participants will be introduced to the basics of the Folio layout. Participants will also be instructed on how to upload content to their course, create HTML pages and link content to the learning modules.

Goal: To develop a learning module that allows organization of instructional events for students.

Learning Objectives:

  • Review the basics of Folio Layout: My Home, Widgets, Role Switch, My Settings, Navbar, Links, Course Home
  • User Profile: Profile Settings, Notifications, Account Settings
  • Upload content files to the Manage Files area
  • Create modules and other objects using the Course Builder
  • Create and edit HTML pages
  • Create QuickLinks, insert photos, audio and video components.
  • Add participants to the Classlist.
  • Activate course content.
  • If time permits: Email and Calendar

Please bring your Syllabus on a flash drive or some other document to upload during this workshop.

Discussions

The Discussion tool provides an area(s) for asynchronous communication that can be used to create peer interaction and conversations. Forums , i.e. categories are created as a way of organizing the Topics, which are essentially the question prompts in Folio. Students can post and reply to messages in the Discussion Topics.

Goal: To explore different types of asynchronous communication in an online course.

Learning Objectives:

  • Create Discussion forums and topics
  • Set Discussion properties
  • Review the use of the “Discussions Instructions” document
  • Reply, and edit messages
  • Add notifications and flag messages
  • Attach files to Discussion messages
  • View and grade student posts

Dropbox (Assignments)

The Dropbox tool is a place where students can submit documents to you. The documents can be in the form of Word, PowerPoint, .PDF etc. Dropbox assignments can easily be graded and returned to the students.

Goal: Set up and grade Dropbox (assignments) in Folio.

Learning Objectives:

  • Set up and grade Dropbox (assignments)
  • Review “assignment instructions” to Dropbox assignment
  • Modify settings in Dropbox tool
  • Enable the plagiarism detection tool, Turnitin
  • Enable Original Check for students
  • Flag Dropbox (assignments)
  • Grade Dropbox (assignments)

Assessments

The Assessment Workshop will cover the use of the Folio: Quiz and Survey tools.

Goal: To explore the different type of assessments tools in Folio. The main focus will be on the Quiz type.

Learning Objectives:

  • Discuss question library and question types
  • Create quiz questions
  • Determine security settings for quiz questions
  • Create random sections for quizzes
  • Review, grade and provide feedback to students

Advanced Assessment Features

This workshop will cover some of the more advanced features in working with the assessment tool in Folio.

Goal: To get your advanced assessment questions answered.

Learning Objectives:

  • Set up quizzes with random selections
  • Create groups and group assessments
  • Create rubrics and add them to assessments
  • Grade an assessment with a rubric
  • Conditional release
  • Reset quizzes..
  • Work with final grades
  • Import/export assessments
  • Import/export grades

Grade book

This session will cover the set up and management of your Folio Grade book.

Goal: To create, modify grades, and organize your grade book.

Learning Objectives:

  • Setup grade book
  • Create course grade schemas
  • Create categories for items
  • Navigating your grade book
  • Organizing your grade book
  • Editing your grades in the grade book
  • Editing grade book settings

Communication Tools

This workshop will introduce to the communication tools with Folio. Participants will learn
how to use the News, Classlist. Email, Calendar, and Intelligent Agent tools.

use the News, Classlist. Email, and Calendar.

Learning Objectives:

  • Create and post News items
  • Add attachments to News Items
  • Compose Folio Email
  • Edit Email settings and other options
  • Create Calendar items
  • Create Task items

Audio/Video Workshop

This workshop will show you how to add audio to your PowerPoint lectures and publish it
to your course. Powerpoint presentations can be saved as .wmv files and posted to
Youtube to create a web-ready format. We will also set up a slide presentation using
SlideRocket, import an existing Powerpoint presentation and publish it your online course.

Learning Objectives:

  • Narrate PowerPoint
  • Convert PowerPoint to web accessible format and post to Youtube
  • Create slide presentation using SlideRocket
  • Import an existing Powerpoint into SlideRocket
  • Link and Embed A/V files to your Folio course

Google Hangouts

Google Hangouts includes features like video, audio, desktop application
sharing, and content presentation. Google Hangouts also provides online users
with the benefit of a fully interactive online course.

Goal: Set up a Google Hangout session and use the software to conduct a
synchronous session.

Learning Objectives:

  • Set up a Google Hangout as Host
  • Identify Google Hangout settings for host, presenter, and participate
  • Invite participants to your Google Hangout session
  • Experience the Google Hangouts as a participant
  • Discuss classroom etiquette using the Google Hangouts

Adobe Connect Workshop

The Adobe Connect software includes features like video, audio, desktop application sharing, and content presentation. Adobe Connect software also provides online users with the benefit of a fully interactive online course.

Goal: Set up an Adobe Connect classroom and use the software to conduct a synchronous session.

Learning Objectives:

  • Set up an Adobe Connect Classroom as Host.
  • Identify Adobe Connect settings for host, presenter, and participate.
  • Invite participants to your Adobe Connect classroom.
  • Experience the Adobe Connection classroom as a participant.
  • Discuss classroom etiquette using the Adobe Connect options available

Assignment Grader and Binder Apps

The purpose of this workshop is to introduce the Desire2Learn (Folio) Assignment Grader and Binder Apps the iPad, iOS5 or greater. The Desire2Learn Assignment Grader gives you the ability to grade from a mobile device. It also gives you the ability to grade online or offline. It provides quick and easy access to assignments allowing you to assess using rubrics, annotate with online comments, and provide personalized text, audio or video feedback.

The Desire2Learn Binder is an intuitive document reader that enables you to interact with PDF, Microsoft Office files and more, on your tablet device. The Desire2Learn Binder App allows to annotate and organize content more easily to help you get the most from the learning.

  • Assign grades and give feedback online using the iPad
