Vision and Mission Statements

Vision

The Center for Excellence in Teaching appreciates and respects the experience, knowledge and wisdom of Georgia Southern faculty and is an enthusiastic persevering advocate, agent, and catalyst for the faculty's unprecedented professional development in teaching, learning, and scholarship.

Mission

The Center for Excellence in Teaching, in aligning its mission with the central mission of Georgia Southern University, recognizes teaching as a complex intellectual activity and process that develops best in a collegial culture of intellectual inquiry about learning, teaching, scholarship, and the academic life. In this context, the Center advocates and provides transformative professional faculty development that is voluntary, formative, confidential, competent, and grounded in theory and practice.

This mission includes promoting programs, services, and resources that will foster and facilitate these benchmark accomplishments:

• Inquiry and research-led, evidence-based teaching and student learning through the scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL)
• Open, interdisciplinary exchange of ideas and innovations among faculty
• Peer-based formation, application and dissemination, among faculty, of research and teaching practices and outcomes
• Significant student learning through course design, assessment, and teaching for understanding and higher-order thinking in classroom, blended, and online formats
• Wise pedagogical uses of technologies (SMART classrooms, WebCT, multimedia, and other applications)
