SoTL - Scholarship of Teaching and Learning

What is SoTL?

SoTL is a key way to improve teaching effectiveness, student learning outcomes, and the continuous transformation of academic cultures and communities. Through research questions and methodologies applied to teaching and learning, the making public of that research and its results so that it can be analyzed and critiqued, and through the constructing of a growing body of knowledge about teaching and learning, college and university teaching is seen as a serious intellectual activity that can be evidence and outcome based.  Read about SoTL.

SoTL Tutorial

The SoTL Tutorial is hosted on the International Society for SoTL's site.

Carnegie Academy for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning

CASTL represents a major initiative of The Carnegie Foundation. Launched in 1998, the program builds on a conception of teaching as scholarly work proposed in the 1990 report, Scholarship Reconsidered, by former Carnegie Foundation President Ernest Boyer, and on the 1997 follow-up publication, Scholarship Assessed, by Charles Glassick, Mary Taylor Huber, and Gene Maeroff.

CASTL seeks to support the development of a scholarship of teaching and learning that 1) fosters significant, long-lasting learning for all students; 2) enhances the practice and profession of teaching; 3) brings to faculty members' work as teachers the recognition and reward afforded to other forms of scholarly work.

International Society for SoTL

The International Society for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning (ISSOTL) serves faculty members, staff, and students who care about teaching and learning as serious intellectual work. The goal of the Society is to foster inquiry and disseminate findings about what improves and articulates post-secondary learning and teaching.

International Journal for SoTL

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning (IJ-SoTL)
is an open, peer-reviewed, international electronic journal published twice a year by the Center for Excellence in Teaching at Georgia Southern University. It is to be an international vehicle for articles, essays, and discussions about the scholarship of teaching and learning and its applications in higher/tertiary education today.

IJ-SoTL Listsev (Mailing List)

IJ-SoTLDiscussion List (listserv) exists to encourage and stimulate conversations involving IJ-SoTL contributors and readership in ongoing discussions about any and all aspects of the scholarship of teaching & learning. The editor of IJ-SoTL will also use the listserv for infrequent notices about SoTL events, conferences, resources, etc.  Subcribers form a very international group of people interested in inquiry and investigation into teaching and student learning in higher education today.  To subscribe to the listserv, go to http://www.georgiasouthern.edu/ijsotl/dl.htm.

Institutional Review Board

Doing scholarship on teaching and student learning involves people in the research methods and investigation.  Thus, fundamental ethical issues can arise in conducting such research.  Adherence to basic ethical principles when conducting research involving human subjects is discussed in Georgia Southern’s Policies and Procedures of the Institutional Review Board.
