Background

I joined the faculty at Georgia Southern University in the fall of 2001 when the program in information technology (IT) was just starting and curriculum was being developed. I was provided with an opportunity to play a large role in the development of several courses as well as input into the development of the overall program. It was exiting to see the IT program grow into a popular major with over 400 students. My teaching specialties are in Web page design, middle layer programming, and integrated web applications. My research interests include e-commerce, industrial economics, and multicultural studies.

Teaching and Learning

My teaching philosophy is that you have to have compassion for students in order to enjoy teaching. Teaching is to facilitate others and learn at the same time.

To prepare myself in delivering courses, I took all seminars offered by the Center of Excellent in Teaching during my first semester at Georgia Southern. I use WebCT to post course materials, conduct quizzes, and communication with students outside the classroom. To help students organize course work I compile syllabus, assignments, detailed class schedule, and class notes into a booklet and have Eagle Print Shop deliver the booklets to the university bookstore at the beginning of each semester.

Information technology is a rapid advancing field and students adopt the technology much faster than the general population. Some of my students run internet servers, design web pages for businesses, and work as IT support personnel inside and outside our university. To have the courses synchronized with IT advances and make the courses relevant to the students’ experience outside classroom, I have to be alert with the new developments. I review journals and textbooks and update course materials accordingly. It makes teaching very interesting and challenging.
