Georgia Southern University
Director, Faculty Technology Development Lab (FTDL) &
Assistant Director of CET
Center for Excellence in Teaching (CET)
Georgia Southern University - Statesboro, Georgia
In 1997 our Provost and
Acting President asked me to serve as the director of a
program that would facilitate the integration of technology
for teaching and learning among both Georgia Southern faculty
and support staff. As Director of the FTDL, I oversee the
design and delivery of both face to face and online instructional
technology development programs.
I assess training needs
and identify tools/technologies that promise positive impact
for teaching and learning. In collaboration with faculty
members and other Center staff members, I create programming
that bridges the gap between current skill levels and aspired
levels in teaching with technology. To that end we offer
a variety of learning experiences including product demonstrations,
shoot-outs (comparing similar tools), and hands-on, product-oriented
workshops. In these sessions (on online modules) the primary
focus is upon HOW this tool can be used in enhancing learner
engagement.
Georgia Southern has over
700 subject matter experts (faculty members!) in over thirty
academic departments. My job is to assist them in designing
their courses and resources so that
student learning is more engaging, self-paced, and encompases
multiple learing styles. I consult individually with an
average of 180 faculty members per year on a variety of
instructional projects. I promote activities that enhance
learner engagement by; acting as listowner of the FACTEK-L
listserv, editing the CET's newsletter, offering face-to-face
workshops and consulting, and developing "24/7"
versions of frequently requested programs via our website.
In
addition to these duties I serve on several committees where
technologies promise positive educational impact. These
include: ITAC (Information Technology Advisory Council),
the Interactive Teaching Committee, and the AV/Smart Classroom
Committee.
August, 1994 - July, 1997
Instructional Designer, Distance Learning Center
Georgia Southern University - Statesboro, Georgia
After completeing my Ed.
D. Instructional Technology coursework at the University
of Georgia I returned to Georgia Southern in a new role
as an Instructional Designer for the Distance Learning Center.
As a first task I conducted a front-end analysis for teaching
and learning in interactive television environments. I designed/delivered
training programs (via both face-to-face and closed-circuit
interactive television environments) to faculty transitioning
from a traditional classroom to the interactive television
classroom and developed training for student facilitators.
Georgia Southern was a leader
in using the GSAMS (Georgia Statewide Academic and Medical
System) network to deliver post-secondary coursework to
qualified high school and non-traditional students all over
Georgia. I served as our unit's first webmaster. This greatly
facilitated distribution of support materials for faculty
and off-campus students. I started the listserv FACTEK-L
(Faculty using Technology in the Classroom) to expand (via
peer networking) support for faculty using technology in
support of instruction. I was named chair of the Computers
in the Curriculum Committee and I coordinated Georgia Southern's
first two Instructional Technology Conferences.
August, 1985 - September,
1991
Instructor/Coach - Health and Kinesiology
Georgia Southern University - Statesboro, Georgia
In the summer of 1985 I
was hired as an instructor for physical education majors
techniques courses in gymnastics, track & field, and
team field sports. I also taught the cornerstone "Foundations
of Physical Education" course and numerous activity
courses including; personal fitness, badminton, volleyball,
tennis, and golf.
During my second year at
Georgia Southern I attended a ten-week "Computer Literacy"
program for faculty. I quickly realized the educational
value of computers for teaching and learning. Over the next
four years I designed and developed several interactive
courseware projects including:
|
|
A
golf rules primer and simulation- where almost
everything goes wrong! Only
thorough knowledge of the rules of golf permits survival. |
| |
A
tumbling skills tutorial. Based upon foundational
biomechanical principles.
Covered 28 skills
from "body awareness skills" to the flipflop
(backhandspring). |
| Foundations
Jeopardy |
A game based on textbook content on world and American
History of Health and Physical Education. |
Prudent
Heart Living |
Health
and Fitness courseware based on the American Heart
Association program of the same name. |
I soon began to present
at state, regional, national, and international conferences
on uses of interactive media in health and physical education.
July, 1981 - August, 1985
Gymnastics Coach
University of Georgia, Athletic Association - Athens, Georgia
In July, 1981 the University
of Georgia hired me as the Men's Gymnastics coach. At that
time the UGA men's program was not ranked in the top 50
programs in NCAA Division I. Over a four year period our
team progressed from a sub 7.2 average per man to slightly
less than a 9.2 average per man. EVERY individual and team
record was broken (sometimes repeatedly) during this period.
I was named Southern Intercollegiate Gymnastic League "Coach
of the Year" in both 1983 & 1984. My teams' performance
in the classroom showed a similar trend with the average
GPA improving from a 2.3 to nearly 3.0. Upon my departure
in 1984 (to return to teaching), the UGA Bulldogs were ranked
14th in the country according to National Gymnastics Judges
Association statistics.
