About Blackrocket

Black Rocket’s digital arts camps are designed to bring students’ ideas to life in a fun, hands-on, learning environment.  Black Rocket provides over 20 cutting edge STEM courses that you can choose from. Choose whichever model program fits you best. Plus there is no prior experience necessary!

2017 Game Design Courses

All camps are half day or can be combined for full day camps from 8 a.m.-5 p.m.

Ages 9-14

Registration Fees:

  • Half Day Sessions: $159/session
  • GSU Employee Discount: $149 per session (ends June 2, 2017)

App Attack!

Dates: June 12-16, 2017 (Limited to 20 participants)
Time: 8:30 a.m. – 12 p.m. (early drop off at 8 a.m.)

Location: Nessmith-Lane Center, Computer Lab #1707
Registration Deadline: June 9, 2017
Take the first steps into the world of mobile app design and customize your own game app! Using a specialized app & game development tool, students will explore the world of web-based (HTML5) mobile apps. In addition to learning the basics of mobile app design and game development, you will also see firsthand how the world of App publishing functions. Student-created apps will be accessible on a private site and can be played on any mobile device or computer. Publishing to App Stores not included. No prior experience is necessary and students do not need to own a smartphone or tablet to take the class. Parent email address is required to use 3D modeling software. Students will work in pairs or teams for most of the program.

 

Minecraft Designers

Dates: June 12-16, 2017 (Limited to 20 participants)
Time: 1:30-5 p.m. (early drop off at 1 p.m.)

Location: Nessmith-Lane Center, Computer Lab #1707

If you love the game Minecraft, and always wanted to design your own world, this class is for you! Learn how to create a custom map, the basics of creating 3D models using a new software to design your very own objects, how to build with Redstone and Command blocks, and create custom textures for you to import at home or share with friends. Parent email address is required to use 3D modeling software. Students will work in pairs or teams for most of the program. Returning students can create more advanced projects that build on previous years.

 

Minecraft Modders

Dates: June 19-23, 2017 (Limited to 20 participants)
Time: 8:30 a.m.- 12 p.m. (early drop off at 8 a.m.)

Location: Nessmith-Lane Center, Computer Lab #1707
Registration Deadline: June 16, 2017
Use your favorite game to learn the basics of modding and foundations of programming. Learn scripting and logic statements as you create your first mods! Introductory coding will also be taught through a simulated environment inspired by Minecraft.
Parent email address is required to use 3D modeling software. Students will work in pairs or teams for most of the program. Returning students can create more advanced projects that build on previous years.

 

Code Breakers

Dates: June 19-23, 2017 (Limited to 20 participants)
Time: 1:30-5 p.m. (early drop off at 1 p.m.)

Calling all future coders, programmers, & designers! Learn the basics of coding languages like HTML, JavaScript, and CSS through a series of web projects and design challenges each day and be on your way to becoming the next tech star! Whether you want to be the next Mark Zuckerberg or the high school student who just made $1 million dollars for programming in his bedroom, this course has the essentials you need to begin your journey.

Parent email address is required. Projects will be available on a Black Rocket website to share with friends and family. Students will work in pairs or teams for most of the program. Returning students can create more advanced projects that build on previous years.

 

Star Wars Stop Animation

Dates: June 26-30, 2017 (Limited to 20 participants)
Time: 8:30 a.m.- 12 p.m. (early drop off at 8 a.m.)

Location: Nessmith-Lane Center, Computer Lab #1707
Registration Deadline: June 23, 2017
Make your own Star Wars adventure come to life! Bring in your favorite action figures or Star Wars and create a short film with your friends. Whether you want to recreate a scene from Star Wars or design a new world of your own, this class brings your dreams to the screen. Students will need to bring in Star Wars action figures or vehicles from home, but all other equipment provided. Parent email address is required. Student-created films will be available on a password protected website to share with friends and family. Students will work in pairs or teams for most of the program.

 

Minecraft Animators

Dates: June 26-30, 2017 (Limited to 20 participants)
Time: 1:30-5 p.m. (early drop off at 1 p.m.)

Location: Nessmith-Lane Center, Computer Lab #1707

Bring your favorite Minecraft characters to life in an animated short film! Learn how studios like Pixar and Disney make movies like Inside Out and Frozen by using techniques like keyframing, tweening, texturing, and animating rigged 3D models! Parent email address is required. Student projects will be available on a password protected Black Rocket website to share with friends and family. You do not need to own a Minecraft account to use the software in this class. Students will work in pairs or teams for most of the program. Returning students can create more advanced projects that build on previous years.

 

LEGOⓇ Video Games

Dates: July 10- 14, 2017 (Limited to 20 participants)
Time: 8:30 a.m. -12 p.m. (early drop off at 8 a.m.)

Location: Nessmith-Lane Center, Computer Lab #1707
Registration Deadline: July 6, 2017

Combine your two favorite activities: LEGOs and Video Games! Students will create their own Program Web Content Form 2 LEGO characters and adventures in an interactive 2D Video Game. Everyone is welcome in this one of a kind class. At the end of the program, every student will have a finished LEGO Video Game that can be shared with friends and family through a password protected Black Rocket website. Games are only compatible on PC computers; Mac versions can be created after the program for a $15.00 conversion fee.

Parent email address is required. Students will work in pairs or teams for most of the program.

 

Game Labs

Dates: July 10- 14, 2017 (Limited to 20 participants)
Time: 1:30-5 p.m. (early drop off at 1 p.m.)

Collaborate- Create- Compete in the Ultimate Video Game Experience. For serious gamers only! Beyond 2D and 3D, now it's time to take it to another level by competing with the world! Students will develop games with a partner using a unique game engine. Students will learn advanced level editing, simple 3D modeling, intermediate event scripting and the impact of game play on user experience. Students will work in pairs or teams for most of the program. Parent email address is required. System Requirements for home experience: 2GB of RAM, and 2.0GHZ processor.
