Dr. Belkis Torres-Capeles joined Georgia Southern University’s Division of Continuing Education team in August of 2014. As the Executive Director of the Division of Continuing Education, Nessmith-Lane Center and Coastal Georgia Center, Dr. Torres-Capeles oversees the division’s efforts in offering non-credit continuing education programs to improve the skills of the workforce, enhance societal and cultural understanding, facilitate healthy lifestyles, and address personal development and enrichment needs. She also oversees the operations and brand development of the Nessmith-Lane Center on Georgia Southern’s campus as well as the Coastal Georgia Center in Savannah, Georgia. In addition, she oversees the English Language Program (ELP), a non-credit bearing program offering an active, student-centered approach to learning for international students wishing to enter into degree programs at Georgia Southern University.
Prior to joining the Division of Continuing Education, Dr. Torres-Capeles served as the Vice President of Programs for the Boulder Institute of Microfinance. Previously she worked at Valmark Securities, Inc., as the Director of Conference Planning.
Dr. Torres-Capeles received her Bachelor of Arts in Communications, her Master of Arts in Liberal Studies, Counseling, and Conflict Management and her Ph.D. in Cultural Foundations of Education, Leadership, and Administration from Kent State University. She has developed curriculum and taught courses online and in the classroom on topics such as multicultural education, socio-cultural economics, international and intercultural perspectives, women and gender studies, personal enrichment and workforce development at Kent State University and in continuing education venues.
Dr. Torres-Capeles is currently a board member for Leading and Advocating Together in New Arenas and holds membership in numerous organizations including the Comparative and International Education Society, the Professional Convention Management Association and the Financial Industry Corporate Planners Organization.
